Very viable. I'm running one right now.

My spellsword is using Onehanded, Destruction, Alteration, Smithing, Restoration, and Conjuration. He wears Heavy Armor, but doesn't perk it.

Battlemage is above, but with Twohanded instead of Onehanded, AFAIK.

I wear Heavy. Just perk Health, Magicka most of the time, with some Stamina mixed in.

Its super viable, i would say its one of the most powerful builds you can make without having to lean on a crutch like impact based builds or crafter builds.

Indeed, this.

I've been considering adding Destruction to my One-Handed fighter, but it's damage seems rather low at higher levels. Would it be worth adding, and if so, should I invest in dual casting?

Just a correction, battlemage might've used two handed in Oblivion, but that's hard to do in Skyrim. Either way, I run my battlemages using armor, heavy or light, with spells in both hands. Very viable on master.

yes but early levels are hard as we dont have enchanting high to reduce cost or enchant armor

My current character is wielding a 1H hammer in his main hand and swaps out spells in his off hand, like fury, turn undead and summon. He can easily soften up a charging enemy with a destructive spell and cave their face in when they get close.

Against my better judgment...it's all on master.

I love it.

It's pretty viable. Destruction won't be a major source of damage for you if you do choose to use it, but it's good for softening targets up before you close to melee range. Conjuration, Alteration, and Restoration supplement melee very well though.

I'm kind of of the mind that a battlemage (2-handed + magic) is too problematic, since you have to disarm yourself every time you cast a spell or heal. Both my characters who relied on magic stuck to one-handed weapons.

I am of the mind, unfortunately, that dual-wielding magic is kind of problematic in most cases, since Destruction magic is kind of weak.
