Record voice conversations on Steam?

Post » Fri Sep 21, 2012 7:20 pm

Hello!

Me and a group of friends are starting a new gaming YouTube channel and the software I use to record games (fraps) only lets me record while in a game. A large portion of the time we are talking over Steam, it's while we're not in game, browsing the nets or whatever while in Steam voice chat. We have many humorous conversations while not in game, and I was wondering if anybody has a program where I can record the audio coming from my microphone, as well as the audio coming from the system audio (where my friends voices are emitted from).

TL;DR:
I need software to record my microphone audio and system audio at the same time outside of gaming.

Please help :-)

I think Audacity may be able to do this.

Can it record my voice and system audio at the same time?

If you select "What You Hear" as the input, yes it should be able to record all sound being played through your system.

i don't know how you would do it through steam chat,

but i have gotten skype to work for me in that situation, which is free and more consistent any ways.

with skype, AFTER you have configured your microphone, all the audio from your conversation will be picked up by fraps.

It will depend upon what game you are playing, but if you are doing something like L4D2 or TF2 I believe it can be done with the in-game system. There's an option or a command in console that is set to 0 by default. Will have to find it, but if you switch it to on it'll record your voice + the voice of your friends.

Other than that Fraps should record everything including your own voice chat. Though you could run audacity in the background while running Fraps so Fraps records your friends + game while audacity records your voice. You can just splice it all in later on, but .wav files can get pretty large if you go on for like 30min. Sony's sound forge might work better, though again i'm not sure about file size.

You can just set up a Mumble/TS3/Vent server and record it through those respective programs.

Fraps can do it: In the General tab check the option: Monitor Aero desktop (DWM) and then under the Movie tab, check Record Win7 Sound AND check Record external input (Microphone or Line-in, depending on your setup).

Obviously you just want the audio there could be better options, but fraps will do video and audio in the Windows desktop.
