How can I produce a short-movie?

Post » Sat Sep 22, 2012 11:23 pm

Oh, wow! I could do that! Write a book, get someone with an epic voice similar to read it out and someone else to produce some drawings of key scenes. layer it with some music and it would be done!

I could have sworn I've seen this done with Lord of the Rings at some point as well as Spartacus or something. It was like a graphic novel with a narrator and voice actors, IIRC.

Yeah, you could do it in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0qfM_YtcVg. But it's not exactly "movie-making".

Again, be realistic. I don't want to make some crappy thing, I want it to be decent. If not, I'd rather just write a book as I said.

It will be crappy, your first films always are.

Film making is harder than most people think, if neither you or anyone you're working with has made anything like this before then it'll be crap. If you really want to do this, then I'd suggest working on smaller projects first and save your good ideas until you get more experience and better equipment. Don't be scared of making something bad, just keep on making stuff until you get better.

Okay. So I am looking for a great artist and a voice actor.

Remember that you'll have to pay these people, I doubt you'll find anyone good willing to work for free.

Why not try just writing the screenplay, rather than making the actual film?

What would be other potential mediums, if any, besides books and film/video?
Videogame mods?

From a very young age, I've always loved telling stories and, for the most part, I've expressed this passion through writing - something which others claim I am apparently very good at and I hope to one day get published. However, I have recently begun to have ideas for stories that I think would be difficult to portray within simply text and I also want to experiment with something new, so I think it would be cool to produce a short-movie based around the Deus Ex universe (whose transhumanism themes really gripped me). Now, I really don't know much about movie production, but what would be the best route to go? I don't have any professional equipment besides a decent laptop that I could do some editing on nor anybody to work on it besides myself. Is animation a potential route or what?

Get a YouTube account and either do animation or get a group of friends together and do a movie.

I think planning and preparation are the most important things to keep in mind. Don't start any filming or production with the idea that you can wing it.

Storyboard, Script, Logistics

And just one more tip. I acted in two of my friends short movies when I was in school. He hadn't made any movies or shorts before these, so I can't blame him for some the mistakes (we still had fun shooting). But my tip is that we discovered timing cannot be overlooked. When you write out how a scene will go down, whatever length of time you think it will be, it will probably be a lot shorter (in our experience).

Just because the dialogue is long in text form, or took a long time to write, doesn't mean that it will be that way when you actually execute/perform the scene.

Videogame mods?
Source Filmmaker could be a good starting point too - it's what Valve use for all their ingame cinematics.

If you want to start off really small, you can make lego stopmotion films like my friend used to do. But you have to be a very patient person to do it.
