Odd email received for game I've never played.

Post » Mon Sep 24, 2012 9:19 am

Something odd I noticed after returning home from spending the weekend at my mother's house this weekend. I have received the following email regarding Diablo 3.

Spoiler

Note: I have never played Diablo 3, I have never played Diablo 1 or 2 either. For that matter, I have never even purchased any game from Blizzard. It's not so much that I'm worried about this account being locked, because I have no affiliation with it.

Should I just delete this email or should I consider taking further action.

NOTE 2: The email this was sent to , I have only given to one website ever...and nobody I know personally has ever been given this address. BGSF are the only ones I have ever given this address to.

Probably obtained whenever the forum was hacked a year or more back.

I think from the way it's written that it's a scam.

Delete it, don't click the links.

Haven't clicked any of the links since I've never owned or played any games from Blizzard. I suspected something was fishy from the get go, that's why I won't click any of the links.

Not entirely sure about the forum hacking though. I think I created that address after the forums were hacked.

If the the email is from an @battle.net email, then it is a legitimate Blizzard employee and you should try to clear that up with a quick call to blizzard customer support.

Bad grammar + "If you wish to not get your account suspended you should immediately verify your account ownership" = trying to get you to a site that will inject malware.

So easy to spoof that.

Damn, I just got done deleting and blocking it from my Windows Live Mail.

Fortunately I have the good sense to not randomly click on links in my email...plus I have several layers of protection from malware. It's also good to know that the fine folks here can be counted on to give some good advice from time to time.

That's why I suggested calling. If it is a battle.net it could be someone is using you to play one of their games, so you call support. And you need to be an actual employee to get a battle.net email account, making it very hard to spoof that.

Naw, it is not worth calling. It's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_spoofing that it came from battle.net, and from the content it obviously didn't.

I get them all the time, for Diablo, WOW which i havent played for years, and even MMO,s ive never played, the funny thing is it goes to the wrong e-mail, not the one thats registered with battle net, basically they want people to put in their account information so they can easily get into their battle net accounts and strip them.

I'm aware of the existence of faking emails, it however is generally not done with the Battle.net or for that matter blizzard.com. It is not unheard, but it is uncommon. I have gotten quite a few "Official Blizzard Emails" myself, and not one has had a Battle.net or Blizzard.com tag. The most common I have heard of is blizzsupport@ blizzardentertainment.net or some variation of that. Hell I've even been hit with a @battlenet.com before. However if an account linked to him is involved in illegal activity, it would be a good Idea to call just to make sure as they could take legal action depending on what term of service he is breaking.

Better to take 15 min to call and make sure then to be sorry in the long run.

I've also had a few of these emails claiming to be from battle.net about my non-existent Diablo 3 account; most were sent to the old email I originally used to sign up here, which I finally disabled as they were becoming annoying.

I'm not sure why you'd say it's "generally not done": scammers will spoof any sender address that is useful to them. It's best to ignore them unless the actually address you in person, and even then one should only visit known addresses (i.e. by typing them yourself: I know the point's been made about not clicking on links, but it's important enough to keep making it...) or use official phone numbers. Generally it's not worth following up this sort of thing as you could spend your whole life faffing about with non-existent problems.

I have never had one of these emails. :ermm:

The last Blizzard game I played was Diablo 2 and Warcraft III. Are these fake emails really as common as you guys are implying?

These things inevitably go to thousands of addresses... if you just put "If you wish to not get your account suspended you should immediately verify your account ownership" in quotes into Google, the first 100 results are all about it being a scam...
