Bethesda, why no GOG.com support?

Post » Wed Sep 26, 2012 8:57 pm

I've been wondering why there aren't any Bethesda games on GOG.COM? If you probably know that it's a website that is selling DRM-Free games that are packed with all kind of goodies "soundtrack, wallpapers etc".

I already bought Fallout 1, 2, Tactics + several other games from the store, and i would love to see Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas and prob. Fallout 3 without that horrible GFWL.

I bet disarming gfwl is like disarming the bomb in Megaton :)

I love Bethesda games, and i would love to buy Skyrim on DVD, but i don't want to activate that game on Steam and i know how much people love Steam and their Steamworks.

Well, presumably Bethesda (or more likely their parent company, Zenimax--and even more likely their shareholders) has concerns about piracy and releasing a game without DRM. Whether those concerns are valid are not are certainly up for debate, but that would be my first guess as to what's stopping them.

That said, given that they already give out Arena and Daggerfall for free on their website, I would love to at least see those two games up on GoG, with or without extra goodies. It would be a great way to reach a wider audience for them, especially if GoG sets them up so the user doesn't have to do any fiddling with DOSBox to get them running. :)

It's fine to have a thread about GOG, but if people want to discuss Steamworks or DRM in any depth please use http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1382539-unofficial-steamdrm-discussion-28/.

In the beginning with GOG standed for Good Old Games, but recently they started selling newer games without any DRM on them. Also they are giving free backup copies of The Witcher 1 & 2 on GOG, and well that's because GOG is CDProjek's sister company.

Thing is, they'd have to do more programming work to make some of the changes you mention. Like...

Fallout 3 without that horrible GFWL.

...for instance. And they haven't even tried to patch Fallout 3 to make it less problematic on 64-bit Win 7 systems (which should be reasonably easy, since FO:NV doesn't have any problems), so....

Not like all those games aren't pirated as it is., so I don't think that's the reason.

Fallout 3 without GFWL is actually a really easy modification. There's a program available on the Nexus that can disable it with the click of a button. Aside from that, I would be ecstatic to see any developer put up games on gog.com. DRM is such a hassle.
