Do MMOs going free to play degrade the game?

Some of my old guildmates in SWTOR are quitting the game because its going f2p, saying that the game is going to be ruined.
Got me thinking.

I myself don't mind, sure there will probably be more "unskilled" players, but thats because you're drawing from a bigger population.
Specifically to SWTOR, I don't mind because its not a "pay to win" situation. Sure, you can get boosts, but so can everyone else. Things that actually effect the game (like gear) you still have to get legitimately. Its the same great content. They aren't going have stupid amounts of xp needed to level (like maplestory).

I think it matters onthe game. One of the MMOs I liked that went f2p got a bit ruined by it.
It was Champions online, kind of like City of Heroes, but with a more robust character customization.
It just ended up with 2/3 characters being some kind of ripoff. You can only see so many Gokus, Ichigos, and other anime copy-cats.

What do you think? Does it even matter to you?

The only ever free to play MMO and MMO I ever played was Aion, earlier this year for around 2 months. Nothing about it's freeness actually took away from my gaming expereince though some of the limitations could be frustrating. However character limits never bother me because I only used one character. It becomes more of a bother when the store elements become game breaking a buy to win. Though I can't say this has ever effected me because I've never played any where it has been a real issue. With one MMO under my belt probably not the best in this subject.

I always think the store and paying features shouldn't be gear or unfair advantages, perhaps cool fashion clothes and stuff for your character or other non-gameplay affecting bonuses. After all it tends to be only really dedicated players that actually bother paying.
