Guy jumping from 120000 feet

I do wish him to succeed, but I fear air traveling companies adapting the method to drop their passengers at destination and save loads of money on fuel.
Well if it works, then what is there to get upset about?

It was just jest, in my absurdly wonky future scenario, airplane passengers with vertigo would have quite a bad time when "landing" that way.

Air hostess: "Remember to stay calm and not make any sudden moves"
Passenger: "There is no way this has been made legaAAAAHHHH!!!"

A bit more on topic, didn't something similar to this appear in the latest Star Trek movie, when they drop a commando from orbit onto the planetary driller?

Edit: once again, wikipedia has relevant info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_diving

But I'm confused, they said it'd happen Monday. Wouldn't 21 hours to go put it into Tuesday if you live on the east coast. This svcks I wanted to see it today. :(

I thought this thread would allow me to express my hatred for Mondays and my 9am lectures. Instead it seems to be about something far more exciting.

I'm half tempted to watch this, although through my fingertips just in case anything horrible happens!

When exactly is it?

I wish I was asleep...
Watching a video of a guy falling for 20~30 minutes sounds boring.

More like 5 minutes, actually. Then either he opens his chute, or it deploys automatically because he's unconscious or dead.

Yeah, man going faster than the speed of sound in an unpowered freefall. Hohum indeed.

I'm guessing they were waiting for optimal weather conditions and pushed the launch window back, but as of now their http://www.redbullstratos.com/ is at 19h34m.

Food is going to be going into my stomach faster than the speed of sound. It's thanksgiving. To the battlements men and women of Canada. For today we dine until we're in hell.

If I'm not mistaken, breaking the sound barrier through free falling would probbably be faster and more damaging than rocket-sledding.
If he's in free fall, there is air pressure, nothing to grab a hold to, no way to cover yourself from the wind, and lots of other things.

Detached retinas doesn't sound too good either.

He's going to be wearing a pressurized suit, so the only real risk is a malfunction of his equipment.

My buddy told me that the jump is going to be carried live on Discovery channel tommorow from 9am-1pm EST.

Everything they had in the papers that the jump was today,Monday, guess it got pushed back to Tuesday.

The articles say that NASA is going to be an observer as they are interested in being able to escape spacecraft.

But NASA is so risk adverse that they make your dad look like Evel Knevel,David Blaine,or Harry Houdini.

Then again,in fairness, every mistake(or mishap) they make is a $1oo million one and also sets human exploration of space back 10 years due to people not realizing just how dangerous even a routine launch is.

High risk high reward.

Well I'll be staying up late to watch it. They're putting it on tv live (with a slight delay I imagine) in Australia at about 11.00 PM

I look forward to seeing whether he survives or not, breaking the sound barrier with your body is pretty awesome. Though I won't be waking up to see it, I have another midterm tomorrow so need my precious sleep.
