Ulfric's successor if he were to die as High King. ***LIKELY

I was thinking, say, Ulfric were to win the Civil War and repel the Aldmeri Dominion out of Skyrim with the help of the Dragonborn, say, he were to live another score of years without a family and pass away.

Who would the moot declare to be his likely successor?

Someone said Elisif would be the most possible choice since surrendering under Ulfric means he might indirectly make Elisif into a ruler on behalf of Skyrim.

***END LIKELY SPOILERS***

Your thoughts?

Theres a lot of if`s in your thread. If Ulfric wins the war and then dies soon after, Skyrim will most likely break off into little holds. The Jarls have no respect for each other, and i see none of them having the power to do what Ulfric can potentially do.

I agree, lots of 'ifs' in there.

If Ulfric were to die as High King after producing a blood heir *and* he still had the support of the majority of Skyrim's Jarls at the time of his death, then one would assume that the crown would pass from father to son/daughter without incident. Or perhaps from Ulfric to a surviving spouse if any children were not of age yet or had never been born.

OTOH Ulfric's ascension to the throne, if it happens, will be breaking an apparently longstanding tradition of the Jarl of Solitude serving as High King/Queen simply because that's the way the Empire liked it and they were the ones really calling the shots. With the Empire out of the picture and that tradition out the window, and possibly with Windhelm having taken the place of Solitude as Skyrim's capital under Ulfric's reign, it might seem like a situation where "anything goes" and who knows what a bunch of mostly contentious, grumpy old Jarls will do in that case? Some of them might start angling for the position themselves, particularly if any direct heir of Ulfric's is young or otherwise unproven.

She remains the official Jarl of Solitude if Stormcloaks win the war doesn't she? Who knows, a few years after the war, when things calm down a bit, Ulfric might want to forge something of a political marriage with her (which could win him former Imperial supporters). If this happened and then Ulfric died before his heir was born or of age, it would open a gate for the Empire to sneak into Skyrim again, since Elisif as we've seen her so far is incapable of ruling independently. This could potentially lead to another civil war because a lot of people would hate to see Stormcloak victory go to waste like that.
The only way to prevent such a scenario would be either Elisif growing some decent cojones while ruling on Ulfric's side or Elisif marrying someone who can actually rule immediately after Ulfric's death.

Other than that, the only other inheritance options I can see are:
- Ulfric marrying someone who's strong-minded enough to rule without him,
- Ulfric remaining single and being superseded by one of his main generals,
- Ulfric, regardless whether married or single, dying in a duel and being replaced by the victor.

Which would require her agreement to the arrangement, which I don't see happening. She hates Ulfric. I suppose if she agreed to such a marriage it could either indicate the birth of the kind of political savvy that she doesn't seem to possess at the moment, or else be a result of the same sort of self-serving spinelessness that caused her to swear fealty to him when her position as Jarl was on the line.

And from Ulfric's position, I also see it as doubtful. He is not a young man, and may be facing war again sometime in the near future - either to maintain Skyrim's independence or in what seems to be an inevitable showdown with the Dominion. I doubt he would marry someone who might still prove to be an easy pawn for the Empire and their supporters should he not live to see a more "suitable" heir reach maturity (in the case of a child) or emerge from the political landscape (should no children be forthcoming).

Simple really either the Empire or the Thalmor march straight back in and restore order with a High King/Queen of their choosing-if they want one.
