Will this be a series?

Will Dishonored be made into a series? I have not gotten the game yet so NO SPOILERS but i just want your (and maybe an administrator...???) opinion on whether or not this will be a series..., or even have a sequel.

I wouldn't be against such an idea. They have created a whole world, so I'd say it's more than worth expanding on in some form.

Welcome to the forums by the way .

Sorry if I come off as kind of a jerk, but this question kind of annoys me. And its nothing against you, ConnMoo, because someone is bound to ask it every time there is a good new IP.

Can't we just enjoy the game itself. Most of us haven't even played it yet, or played it for a significant amount of time, but people are already clamoring for a 'sequel', a 'franchise' or a 'series'. Part of the charm and freshness of this game is that it is a completely new world/IP. I feel like our gaming culture that everything needs to be a 'trilogy' is really holding back innovation. I guarantee you when (not if) this becomes a series, everyone will be saying that its stale and boring by the time Dishonored 3 rolls around.

So I pray (though my prayers may be in vain) that the developers see the success that I'm assuming they will make off of this game not as a sign that the players want to see a trilogy, but that we really enjoy fresh new IPs. So I hope rather than just jumping straight into 'Dishonored 2', the devs decide to give us something else just as fresh as Dishonored is now in 2 (or 3 or 4) years time.

My bet is no, looking at both Dark Messiah AND Arx Fatalis they had large universes which could have been explored endlessly but they weren't. Also it almost seems like Smith and Colantonio atleast, like to create a game with a huge backdrop of scenery, lore and a large universe, only for this single game and leave it at that, to add some mystery to it.

The potential is there, and MAYBE only a small MAYBE we could see a Dishonored 2, but NOT a trilogy here, it would just milk the cow like too many other companies,
and Arkane ain't like that ;)!

I think they said they were considering it. I guess it depends on how well the first game sells.

the Pandyssian Continent is big enough for sequels I suppose :)
Think, steam-punk cities based on Paris or Berlin.
either way it's a brand new IP.
who knows what Arkane studios and/or bethesda will do with it.

This is true, but they're not really "sequels" are they? They're more like instalments or spiritual successors.

Why don't they do what Bioshock did? Have a trustworty company make a sequel a la Bioshock 2 (set in the same world, but a different plot), then have Arkan spend the next few years on a completely new world under the same title.

They're owned by Bethesda, so they'll do what Bethesda wants them to. :hehe: Plus, it seems like the Dishonored world is big enough to support at least two sequels-- and it would be cool to see them iterate on the systems of the first game.

They seem like they had a blast with the first one, so I don't think they'd mind if they made a second or even third installment.

Yes.

That would be risky as to what could be considered "trustworthy": the company might be the sort who are the sort of developers who don't want to take risks and just let the series stagnate; plus it'll spoil the image of the series. It could be a good idea though; I know Frictional games is doing something similar with thechineseroom i.e. TCR crafts a sequel to Amnesia while Frictional work away at their dastardly art.

in all fairness the depth to the worlds of Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah pale in comparison to the world of Dishonored. there is so much tiny, borderline USELESS detail in absolutely EVERYTHING that they had no reason to add but did so anyway, that players might not and indeed probably WON'T stumble across or even particularly care about, just to flesh things out even more. there's a LOT of love put into this setting and i'd be genuinely surprised -- and a little disappointed, frankly, because it's probably the most interesting place i've seen since STALKER -- if they stopped here.

that said i don't want to see it turn into a series of rehashes. a sequel improving on the faults of the first game, like Thief to Thief 2, would be more than enough. i'd rather it not be stretched too far past its expiration date -- but at the same time the art is [censored] beautiful so i'd also very much like to see it on next-gen consoles.

Thief did well with a sequel. I'm all for a Dishonored 2 if it means they get inventive with the story and gameplay. The continent is large and we don't have to follow corvo at all. The main thing is that they don't make something that competes with the first game but rather is it's own thing. (think Alien-Aliens or New Hope-Empire, even Thief-Thief2)

That's what makes a good sequel; one that takes the series to bold new heights rather than chaining itself to an everlasting cycle.

I have absolutely no doubt that this IP will be revisited. The fact that they created an entire world beyond this one game is something I haven't seen done to the same level of depth since DA:O, which also created an entirely new fantasy world for, at the time, one game. They made this world to last beyond one game, perhaps beyond one genre of game (open world rpg anyone?).

Really though: there's a website where they show a map of the known Dishonored world. If you click on anything you will get a paragraph about the topic you selected. Not only does this lore go beyond Dunwall, or beyond the island of Gristol, or beyond the several land masses of islands that make up "The Isles", but you'll notice that these isles, the entire known world of Dishonored are INCREDIBLY SMALL and in the middle of a collossal nameless ocean. Not only THAT, but there's also a full fledged CONTINENT to the east called Pandyssia which no one knows anything about, which is absolutely massive compared to the isles.

The point is, they handcrafted an entire world for us to play with, speculate with, roleplay with, write with. I don't think they're planning on leaving this at one game.
