Why no live kill counter?

While I really enjoyed Dishonored's art style and story till now, I'm a bit disappointed that playing pacifist style is unnecessary frustrating.

In all missions I played till now, the game always told me I killed at least 1 or 2 people, which I definitely didn't. The only explanation I found for this, is that the game also counts indirect kills (once, a guard I knocked out at the beginning of the mission was just eaten by rats when I came back later). While I can accept the design decision, that such kills are also counted, I wonder why there is no kill counter that can be viewed thoughout the mission. This would extremely lower frustation when finishing a mission after 3 hours of playing and just finding that a single kill was counted somehow.

This would be odd, as I remember Harvey Smith saying on Twitter that rat kills don't count if they're not your rats, or perhaps the fact that you knocked him out changes that.

Yes if you knock them out then its your fault if rats kill them. You do not get a kill for regular rat attacks unless they are your rats. Make sure you put bodies where rats cant get to them. A fun minigame IMO :)

Actually, I'm not annoyed by the rats thing at all. But I am annoyed by the fact that you have absolutely no way to check out if there wasn't already one of this "accident" kills counted earlier in the level.

At least some text in the menu screen "No kills" and "No alerts" with a checkbox, like at the stats screen after finishing the mission, would make sure that such discussions whether or not something counts as a kill don't even come up. If you are unsure, you could just check and reload if it was counted.

//EDIT: Oh, but if we are already discussing this: Does it count as an alert if you shoot one guard with the sedative bolt and another one standing beside and noticing the murder immediately thereafter (there were no attention bars displayed at all)?

Yeah I agree that that would be a nice feature to have. I think your last question only counts towards the "bodies found" stat and not detection
