I am not planning to go to Riften any time soon. Is there anywhere else that is reliable? I tried storing stuff in Hod and Sigrid's house once (after following the stormcloak) and my loot showed up in the chest as stolen later on.

I think I tend to be a wandering vagabond and hock off everything I can't carry...or get Lydia Strongback as soon as possible.

Chests are generally not safe (unless they're in your home). Wardrobes and end tables usually are. Check out UESP for safe storage and safe houses.
