Transferring a "Skyrim" saved game to a new computer

Post » Sun Oct 14, 2012 8:24 am

Hello there,

I am going to be visiting my aunts and cousins over the next few months. I was planning on continuing to play Skyrim as and when I get a chance. I was wondering if it would be possible to transfer a saved game from my current computer over to another computer and back and whenever else I need to?

I do have a 32GB flash drive/USB.

If it is possible, would someone please explain to me the steps to go about doing it? Thank you greatly.

You should, just go to the My Games folder [which will be located in My Documents] and more your saves onto the USB drive in the My Computer folder.

....Or if your games legit, you would have to use Steam to play Skyrim. and steam allows you to access your saves from any computer. so long as you have the internet.

If you do the whole "cloud save" thing. Which is fine with games that have tiny saves. But with giant TES saves - and possibly dozens of them?

Using a USB's easy enough. Especially if you're not moving them back and forth often.

But, yeah - personal preference. :)

Manual method:
Saves are stored in My Documents > My Games > Skyrim > Saves. You can freely copy them back and forth between computers.

Only issue is if you're running a modded Skyrim, in which case you'll want to also bring along the files for the mods you use. (And that's true whether you transfer the saves manually or via Steam Cloud.)

The Steam Cloud is pretty unreliable for Skyrim saves. The cache is only 100Mb and a single save can be up to 15Mb large. If you have 3 auto saves and 2 files that's probably 70% of your space gone already.

Alternatively, you can upload your save game to a site such as http://www.mediafire.com/. This is something I've had to do when I had issues running MMM for FO3. I still use it sometimes when I need to re-install windows and just want to wipe the slate clean.
