The Ulfric Stormcloak Discussion Thread #3

Post » Fri Oct 19, 2012 8:01 pm

Because the dead horse is not dead yet, long as it's still interesting :)

In the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1415000-ulfric-stormcloak-murder-racism-and-right-to-the-high-throne-2/page__pid__21671936__st__180#entry21671936, the discussion ends while talking about two points:

1. What exactly the word "asset" means
2. Whether the rebellion is just or not

But basically, a discussion about Ulfric always revolves around these matters:
1. Whether Torygg's death justified or not.
2. Whether Ulfric is a Thalmor agent or not.
3. Whether the rebellion is necessary or not.
4. Whether Ulfric is a racist or not.

So, either we continue the last one or start a new one.

I'll respond to questions put to me.

@celan
Assets are means and enemies are ends. They're trying to destroy the Empire, not use it. I'm not drawing an insignificant difference here.

Of course the Empire failed to defeat the Thalmor. What's your point? Do you really think that a force a fraction of the size of the Legion can hold off a Thalmor invasion when that Legion couldn't?

The Thalmor's goals are to take down Talos so that they can unmake the world, erase humanity from the pattern of existence, and retake what they believe is their true status as gods. Everything they're doing on the political and military level is a means to these ends. So, by your own definition, the empire is an asset now that they're cooperating with them.

Do you really think that the same leadership, using a much weaker and fractured fighting force, who have allowed the enemy to surveill and control them for 30 years, will do what they failed to do before when none of those things were true? The locus of humanity's power is no longer in the Imperial City. Maybe it hasn't been ever since minister Hierem gave White Gold over to Umbriel. Or earlier, when the Septim line died out and the Alessian pact was no longer in force. Something new now has to happen, on a mythic and political level, to preserve humanity. The locus of humanity's power has now moved northward, to an independent Hammerfell and Skyrim. Cyrodiil can join them but it has to give up its demand to do this with a boot on everyone's neck, because that hasn't been working for a long time.

You can't go home again- the old empire is done, gone. At least I hope so, because an Empire 2.0 (or 4.0 or whatever) would be incredibly boring.
