Is Skyrim shamelessly pandering to the Morrowind crowd?

Post » Sat Oct 20, 2012 2:12 pm

I feel like instead of being it's own game, Skyrim is littering itself with heavy handed references to Morrowind (and Oblivion to a lesser extent). You'll notice Oblivion made very few references to Morrowind whereas Skyrim actually has two songs ripped directly from the Morrowind soundtrack in it. I feel like this was a mistake; reminding the player of Morrowind while they're playing Skyrim just (at least in my case) makes them want to play Morrowind.

I feel like they took it too far with Dawnguard though. Having an enire part of that DLC devoted to Jiub was shameless pandering, there's really no other way to describe it. I couldn't believe my eyes or ears when I saw the Jiub part in Dawnguard, it felt like Metal Gear Solid 4 levels of fan service, and it wasn't even well done.

And now to hear the next DLC is literally Bloodmoon 2.0? It's frustrating because Skyrim is not Morrowind. Skyrim is a very combat/dungeon oriented game, and when it tries to evoke Morrowind it comes up hollow.

I think IF the new dlc is in fact in Solsheim, it will be a developer giving the fans what they say they want. I know it may not appeal to everyone, but I think a lot of people would like a chance to return to a previous place and see what's changed in 200+ years.

Jiub was a glorious figure who deserved much more than one line in a game.
And this Solstheim DLC hits many birds with one stone, by giving more insight on the current Dunmer situation and culture, by adding a new landmass close to the original land (Skyrim), by giving players a chance to re-experience Solstheim and see how it has changed...

I am on PS3 so I don't have Dawnguard, but I did not feel like references to prior games in Skyrim was heavy handed. Skyrim takes place in the same world as Morrowind and Oblivion, so some references to prior games seems natural.

Oh come on... people are never satisfied.
I love to see more imagination to Skyrim, the setting gets sometimes too boring.
Morrowind had much more fantasy to it, much more fantastic stuff.
So if they bring back the vibe of Morrowind, there is nothing to complain.

Now here we are...

Jiub is more of an easter egg and was an optional side quest. In Oblivion you would hear rumors about how he killed all the cliff racers. Its Bethesda's way of kinda tipping their hat to their fanbase.

In regards to the Solstheim DLC. Its a new land mass to new players and its a chance to get nostalgic with the old ones. From a selling perspective it should get everyone really excited.

What im interested in knowing is what game did you start with? Oblivion? Morrowind? Daggerfall maybe?

It was a great idea to bring back soundtracks from previous games (Morrowind is the only one YOU noticed) and you call it DIRECTLY RIPPING. I honestly don't see a problem either, I have a feeling you're a bit too focused on that single game itself.

There are plenty of references to Oblivion too... the guy with the Mythic Dawn museum, Sheogorath making vague references to the events of Shivering Isles, etc. I think you're exaggerating.

Jiub got one minor side quest not a large dedicated part. Most I am sure strolled right past him

It's been 207 years. I think that is enough time for something new to happen.

It goes with the lore and the timeline. I don't see why they should avoid Morrowind references.

Also, since Morrowind was the first true 3D TES game, it makes sense that a lot of things from it would become more standard for TES as a whole, rather than confined to a single game.

Is it pandering? Possibly.
Is it a bad thing? If you choose to think of it as such.
Me, personally? I'm eager to see what they do with it. They make the game, I play it. A simply symbiotic relationship.

i would love to see the next TES game go back into morrowind or oblivion X amount of years later and see how everything changed and what new things appear and what danger arises or of course as we ALL would love as well ELF homeland and regain our right to worship talos once again

Dude... It was never said that we would get Bloodmoon 2.0 and quite frankly I dont think so. For reasons stated above. E.g. it has been about 200 years. Enough time for changes.

I'm rather excited. I hope this turns out as awesome as it sounds. Because Dawnguard didn't please me at all. It kind of svcked in my opinion.

Ha, thats funny. First off, the morrowind songs are great. Secondly, so is the mission with juib. Thirdly, IF the dlc thing is true, dont you think that new players would want to explore a land everyone else did but them? I was lucky enough to enjoy morrowind: bloodmoon sometime after skyrim's release, and I think it would be a shame for players not to experience the island in some way shape or form.
