Had a huge argument over skype to a guy about about this. I wanted to throw this video out here to share this and see what other peoples thoughts where on this. It really does open my mind on things about games we have today.

I can't type alot due to being on a phone and having broken ribs... Otherwise I would have maybe 20 paragraphs on this...

Also I do recommend watching other of his videos.

Photorealistic graphics in games are cool. Not to say all other styles should be ditched, but photorealistic is by far the most impressive. Games like Crysis and Battlefield 3, for example, are very well done and the former, with mods, is getting close. It will be interesting to see what tricks are used in the next generation.

Of course, that's my opinion.

Minecraft's success has had a pretty huge impact on the industry.....here is a game that looks about 10 years out of date in the graphics department....cost very little (in regards to a AAA title) to make and then went and sold better then many other AA and AAA titles.

Unfortunately graphics seem to be the selling point on games now....and the next generation of people playing games has had this so ingrained into them that they now wont pick up a game if it doesn't have the latest tech in it. I heard people complaining that the new Simcity look [censored] cause its not realistic like call of duty. This people, is the casual market, where graphics are the easiest way to sell your game and its what most companies work on to do.

I don't care about photorealism in games. Sure it's nice to see something all shiny but other art styles keep me entertained just as well. For example I've played Terraria far far too much and that isn't photorealism, I for one look forward to the day when newer games aren't judged mainly on looks. Would be nice to see the gameplay and storylines being a bigger focus. Not saying that every new game slacks on story and gameplay but some certainly don't seem to be doing much apart from standing there looking pretty. I for one wouldn't like a game to ever be proper photorealistic. That would be jarring. If I want picture perfect photorealism do you know what I do? I go for a walk.

I hope a lot more titles lean towards a Torchlight II style or something that costs less for the designers so that they can focus more on creating something really special. I know this example has probably been used a lot but a game like Minecraft 'graphically' doesn't look that great. That doesn't take away from the fact it is really deep and has something that you can get your teeth into. Much like Terraria, though I've not actually played Minecraft myself. I'm not saying that I don't want games to look better as the years go by, I fully embrace that. I love seeing new graphics and being blown away. But what I am saying is I don't want games to become too orintated on pandering, looking shiny and realistic and just not being about fun anymore.

well given how minecraft's demographic has been largely saturated with gamers 12 years and younger there is at least that number that can see beyond the graphics and judge a game by its content.
