Things in Skyrim that touch you emotionally?

Post » Mon Oct 22, 2012 11:23 pm

As the title says, what are the things that make you feel like roaring in triumph, murdering, or sitting in a corner and crying your eyes out?

The only thing I can really bring to mind is Sophie, in Windhelm, she's always like "Nobody bought any flowers again today.", or "I'm so hungry" or "It's so cold" and then, "Thanks. Thanks for talking to me" It almost brings a tear to my eye. Almost.

Today I was standing on the top of a high peak with my greatsword, looking over the forgotten vale while the 2 dragons were givener in circles. I didn't even do anything and I felt like a BA.

Honestly, I hate killing dragons. I love dragons so much and as Dragonborn I feel like we're bros or something. When I think how I have to defend all this stupid people who cry over a dead chicken, or using my shouts in town, it makes me feel bad. I wish I could party up with a dragon, raid a town, and than be off. Poor dragons... :(

Skyrim doesn't even know what emotion is...

Though actually....
The first time I joined the Companions, I had the game in German. The German voice actors were, looking back on it, better than the original english voice actors. Farkas' speech about how he would stand at your back til the world overtake both of you while hearing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMxt7-QoWf0 was pretty good, though it simply doesn't have the same effect in English cause the english voice actors are pretty derp.

A frost dragon attacked river wood,I ran into the inn,got my s#%t together and wen back out to slay the foul beast,as I did so,it had just stopped on the ground not frozen still moving just on the ground over a dead guard,it looked me in the eye as I did it,a minute passed as we both just stood a yard apart, then it took to flight and left, just like that,no beef with me so I didn't have beef with it,tis was a touching moment that I pretended to be some sort of mutual respect, prob just a glitch or mabey I was too high a level,I will tell my grand kids of that day and they will theirs,*sniff*

When that moment comes when my long-time pal, Roggi, is going to join me in an overwhelming battle amid tempests of enemies. We're going to battle as hard as we can while I blast some triumphant music. He'll die (cue soft, sad yet driving music), I'll look down at him and get furious and fight, run out of arrows, take a blow to the stomach, and then whip out a dagger and slash as hard as I can at the monsters; then I'll die.

After the screen fades to black, I'll pop in The Elder Scrolls Six, and start my next game, playing as my player's descendant; a new journey, a new story.

The only thing in the whole game that stirred any kind of emotion was killing Parthurnaxx. He helped me so I didn't really want to kill him. But hey, I'm the ultimate dragonslayer. It's just business. So, I swallowed my anger and got to work.

Most of the characters in TES games fall flat, so any kind of emotional delivery also falls flat. However the writing in the books really nails some good stuff. Nothing I can think of off the top of my head, but great stuff there. Aventus Arentino's dark brotherhood prayer is pretty good too.

Just that the mountains and terrain remind me of where I live (Utah U.S.). But I never really get emotionally attached to a game, unless you count an insane amount of love for the game. TES series are my favorite games of all time.

Oh yeah, that was still pretty good in English, not great, but pretty good.

The beginning of the Darkbrotherhood did screw with me a bit.

My first marriage was pretty shocking when I realized how undeveloped it is.

At the end of the Battle of Whiterun, on the Stormcloak side.
Spoiler
Hearing Balgruif's speech and having to fight him into submission was really, really hard.

Having returned from the Potage le Magnifique quest for the Dark Brotherhood.
Spoiler
I'd developed a good bond with my character's brothers, and it was heartbreaking to see their charred corpses. Even harder to discover that Astrid, who my character trusted and loved as a sister, had betrayed them all.

There are many other moments of emotion, but those two are the biggest ones.

The music was the biggest source of emotion for me. Jeremy Soule's best work, imo.

Killing Alvor in front of his wife and child and then speaking to them so I can hear their sadness/hate of me. I'm either sadistic or a masochist.

Good man, called Angrenor Once-Honored passed away. I was roleplaying on this toon, and I used to give him money and use pickpocketing to give him food. And for the first time, I got a letter which informs me about his death. He left me 100 gold, saying I am part of his family. God, this got me good :(

Musically and environmentally yeah, those can be beautiful and stunning. Story though? I wasn't really attached to any of the characters to feel a huge emotional connection to them, felt to me as though I were just going through the motions. That said I don't really think a TES game should be judged by it's incredible storytelling. It just didn't do it for me, though it did care somewhat about certain characters. I grew fond of Legate Rikke when doing the Imperial civil war quest line. Though this may be because I just adore her character, she's amazing and I have a bit of a crush on her

My first marriage was pretty shocking when I realized how undeveloped it is.
Marriage to me was nothing more than a gimmicky side show- felt very Fable. I didn't think it really added much depth.

That's a good one. I remember receiving a letter, saying that Ysolda had died. My character fell into a guilt-driven depression when he realised he'd killed her during his first transformation into a werewolf.

Ulfric's speech to Galmar the first time I came to Windhelm.

Very awesome

This too. Except for all of Ulfric's speeches!

Ulfric's dialogue with Rikke at the end of the Stormcloak questline. Short, but sad.

Returning to the Throat of the World after defeating Alduin. All those dragons. Wow.

Well, nothing in Skyrim compared to that robot in F3 reading that bedtime poem to those long dead kids... that was heartrending.

But for Skyrim...
* That Forswon guy's story about his kid being murdered.
* Sapphire's story, even though the end is satisfying.
* "Papa says I won't see Uncle Roggvir anymore..."
* Watching Modesi get killed by an ancient dragon.
* Most of the orphans' stories.

Everyones probably answering a part from some story or questline, but I have to say when an NPC you like dies in general that you don't expect, like from a dragon attack or something, I saw the blacksmith in riverwood go down once, and his daughter hovoring over the corpse, couldn't believe my eyes, I almost wanted to reload my save file but I was like, nope, this is part of the game, I gatta deal with it like how characters die in a movie.

And this is why I love bethesda games so much, the open world sandbox where anything could happen, nothing is scripted, at least not outside the main quest.

The personal stories of the dead that I can find in my exploration. A wrecked house, a flooded prison, a treacherous cave, and reading the stories and the last wishes of the ones who once were there, adventurers like me, seeking for fortune or ordinary people struggling for their life, they always move me and help me connect to the places.
