Idea for Helgen

Post » Tue Oct 30, 2012 11:42 am

I know there are tons of topics on Helgen and that something needs to be done with Helgen. I agree and I was thinking of a way that the Dragonborn would have a use for it and I have come up with an idea I have not read anywhere.

The Civil War has you running around fighting the opposite side you chose and takes you through some great quests. When you complete the Civil War quest, the spoils are a bit... lacking.
Spoiler
I believe you get either a random leveled sword or a daedric sword of the vampire. WOW don't go overboard or anything for the guy that turned the tide of the war... really... I couldn't have gotten this anywhere else!

So I thought it would be awesome if the Dragonborn was given Helgen as a prize to fix up and rebuild it. You would be given a decent sum of gold to get you started and you would pay for people to clean up the debris and to make Helgen like new. You could buy buildings of sorts and place them in certain spots, or it could be like Hearthfire with pre-determined locations BUT you had options for each spot and really customize your version of Helgen. Maybe you want all housing with a watchtower? A guard barrack and a few stores? A inn to grab an ale and tell war stories with your fellow victors of the Civil War.

Maybe you convince the winning side to rebuild it and you get a bit of say so how it gets rebuilt? There are many possibilities out there for Helgen.

Just a thought. I know many of you are tired of seeing Helgen smoldering nearly a year after the attack.

What do you guys think? Would anyone like to see Helgen rebuilt (or you can choose to leave it alone if you really enjoy seeing it still smoking)?

I would rather see it remain as a monument to the intro and Alduin's return.

I think you should also be able to recruit former people who resided in Helgen (Survivors of Dragon Attack) as well as people you have done quests for and befriended.

So can I assume that the Elder Scrolls VI will have a destroyed town as well?

I don't really mind Helgen being destroyed. I'd rather they spend their time on something else.

Well, I met that boy up with his grandpa in a shack, and a skooma addict added with Dawnguard.
Both survived Helgen. :D

Yah like that. You should be able to rebuild Helgen, become it's owner. After that you can talk those guys into coming back to live in Helgen.

Hmm... a grumpy old man who hates "city life," a kid, and a skooma addict. We're off to a great start! :P

I would totally go for this though if it meant you could put Ralof/Hadvar (depending on your allegiance) in charge of something there, either managing the rebuilding, or commanding the local guard forces, something. It's so depressing to finish the CW and have your first Skyrim BFF do nothing but go home to Riverwood and sit and drink and be depressed all day.

And Hadvar, or Ralof (mainly Ralof coz Stormcloaks rule) should be elected Jarl and you become sort of honored guest or thane or whatnot.

I would just rather rebuild it, although I plan on getting a PC with Tundra Defense so I may not care what happens to it :P

It doesn't have to be rebuilt. I just want soldiers to occupy it instead of bandits.

The problem with that idea is that Jarls don't get elected. Skyrim isn't a democracy. Jarls inherit their position or acquire it by appointment from a (higher) sovereign power. Based on what happens in the game, those who get appointed when there is a vacancy are already members of established noble families with the proper bloodlines, or at least members of prominent families. I doubt either Ralof or Hadvar qualify for that type of position.

The other problem is that Helgen wouldn't have a Jarl because Helgen isn't a hold. Helgen is part of Falkreath hold, and is already ruled by whoever is the Jarl of Falkreath. I don't see either victor in the CW "rewarding" the loyalty of Falkreath's Jarl by taking part of his land away to give to some no-name upstart. Jarls in Skyrim are pretty much the last word on what goes on in their own holds, they are essentially petty kings when it comes to local administration. Even the Dragonborn doesn't have the authority to do anything in Helgen without the say-so of whoever sits on the throne in Falkreath.

I'm pretty undecided over something like this. I do like the idea of rebuilding Helgen into a functioning town. Add another town to the map, plus its nicely situated between Riverwood and Falkreath if you wanted to make your headquarters there. I see the Imperials reclaiming it and rebuilding it at some point in the future since it was a Imperial held town.

On the other side though, I don't know if the Stormcloaks would like to rebuild it. I got the feeling that Helgen was a sort off Imperial landmark, something I'm sure the Stormcloaks would rather see destroyed than built back. And as someone else said, maybe it should just be made into a ruined landmark dedicated to the horror of Alduin. It should definately NOT become a new Hold and have a Jarl though. I have a feeling its going to be left for the bandits for the duration of Skyrim though.

I'd like a dlc where you find out Helgen is haunted and Ghosts are attacking Falkreath and Riverwood.

I think if you're going to be able to rebuild Helgen then you should be able to resurrect some other towns that aren't in the game and not really much is explained as to what happened to them. Towns/villages like: Oakwood, Laintar Dale and Amber Guard.

I love the idea. Instead of Jarl you could take on a role like Rorik's. Run a shady little town and drink mead/eat moon sugar all day depending on if you chose Khajiit or not Khajiit. You should really just go with Khajiit though.

I've heard it said that doing anything to Helgen can run the risks of bugging out the opening scene.
