Imagine if for some reason you just couldn't use mods anymore, would you still play Skyrim? Me personally I don't think I would keep playing, the game without mods at this point just svcks.

I guess so, likely yes. The game itself is perfectly fine without mods, but after so many characters and hours in it, I typically turn to mods to add something new.

Because the writing is some of the most awful in the history of planet earth, it's a sandbox action game for me. Which is of necessity finite. So mods keep spicing it up a bit.

Yes, but at the moment I'm taking a break from Skyrim. Usually, during my time with Skyrim, I return to the game, play vanilla for a few weeks, and add mods as I feel like it slowly or quickly, and make it like a new game every time as I grow bored of the original game. However, the game I come back for is the base game. I think this is a really stupid question.

Those are mods. Without those 2, Skyrim for PC might very well be non-existent for me. It's a very awesome game by itself, but like thay say: once you've modded it, you can't unmod it.
