Your House Rules while playing Skyrim

Post » Sun Nov 04, 2012 7:49 pm

Do you guys, for one reason or another, make your own rules when you play Skyrim?
I myself made quite a bit, some of them being:

- never use Fast-travel - most cliche house rule I know... but I am a guy who always uses it in OB and even MW (I really can't play that game without coc spell)
- only use stuff I smith and enchant myself - my character is simply too proud to use other people's goods
- never stay away from home for too long after I adopt a kid
- order of playing quests decided by importance and character's (not mine) current mood... and while traveling, act like it (if quest is urgent, don't visit that fancy dungeon... if it ain't I'll think about it... If I want to piss someone (like Delphine) by being late, re-visit the place if needed )
- whenever I find a Word Wall, gotta translate it and imagine my Dragonborn having a conversation with the person buried there... and why is the Word of Power important to that person... and later imagine a dragon in soul form explaining me the importance of the word
- if a Dragon is killed by side of the Word Wall, only unlock the Shout Word present there
- if I put on a Dragon Mask, act like the Dragon Priest (whose personality I predict by looking at place I found him in) took partial control of my character
- only level-up if there are stars in the sky or I am in a place where Dragon Magic is strong... chosen Perk and attribute sometimes decided by most recent quest
- the more Dragon Souls absorbed, the more dragonic my character has to act... that is, more ambitious and thirsty for power he is and I wouldn't do some quests the same way if I had 1 soul and when I have 20 souls absorbed... the character tries to resist it at start (so he turns good for a quest or two more) but later gives in

- High Defense. Weak Attack. In other words, I like to extend battles a lot by using weaker weapons, and such, but at the same time making sure I can't die TOO easily when VS high level enemies like Legendary Dragons.

- Weakness to Shock. I like my characters to be mainly weak to shock while highly resistance, or immune, to Fire and Frost. I will also be weak to other magic spells in general.

- Pick up all dropped weapons/shields and place them on dead bodies.

- Use all potions I find.

- Eat all muffins I find (Sweetrolls).

Etc.

Few of my house rules are:
- No fast traveling only If I have to
- Come home at least for a few days to watch my children, Hroar and Runa Fair-Shield
- Walk with my follower than running ahead
- Help around settlements and cities when I get a chance

I do not do anything grand or extensive. Except that my characters try to get 8 hours of sleep every night. My games are dragon-free affairs, as well, so no main quest, and no shouts.

Certain characters have their own house rules, so to say, that are simply part of their personality. For example, my current character Flavia is a no magic character. So she cannot cast spells, enchant things, or create potions. Cooking food is her only form of creating healing supplies. She can still buy potions and use those, but she is distrustful of them, and has only used healing potions once. Likewise, she does not like using bows, as she considers it a cowardly way to kill an enemy. But on one occasion she was forced to pick up a bandit's bow to fight off some enemy archers. She just hired herself Marcurio for the sole purpose of dealing with ranged threats so she won't have to do that again.

The only real rule I have now is no fast travel by clicking icons on the map.. I still occasionally use the carriage but not always. I would sleep more often, but since you don't need to do that anymore to level up.. I haven't really bothered. There's really not much else I go by.

-No fast travel
-6-8 hours of sleep a night
-I take my helmet off when I`m in a city or town or talking to someone
-I walk in cities and towns or settlements
-Sometimes I take shelter in rain or harsh weather, unless my character is on an urgent mission
-Use a torch at night or in cold weather
-NEVER go in deep or fast water in heavy armor. This, of all things, shatters immersion for me

1. Have fun.

(edit: well, and "save lots", but that doesn't really seem like a house rule, more like just common sense.)

No fast travel except carriages, drink skooma and eat moon sugar on a regular basis. Eat once a day and rest or sleep at least once every two days. I only eat food that I cook myself, I only carry enough rations of food that would last before they go rotten, so usually like 6 rations of meat. Only wear light armor or clothing when being stealthy and a full set of Daedric when going full blast duel-wielding. Pickpocket weapons and use hand to hand combat when the situation is right.

And my most important rule is that I keep a pen and paper journal and write down the point of view from my character's perspective, it's actually the most immersive thing I have ever done, I even made a thread about it called pen and paper journal thread. I don't just right down what my character has done, but his thoughts on certain matters, his tactics in battle, and reflecting on past memories.

-No fast travel except carriages bla bla
-Only use potions I find. I will buy some, but mainly I only use the ones I find. That way I can't just instantly heal indefinitely in battle (broken cheapness).

lol, I actually got tired of it a long time ago. I want to change my name to Leon like my character, but I don't want to make another account. But I figure big iron on his hip now means my melee weapon instead of a gun, even though I use orcish swords, high end daggers, and a Daedric bow lol.

- I only use armor related to whichever questline I'm doing. (Like mage robes for College quests, heavy armor for Companions.)
- I actually shake my head or nod depending on what is said to me.
- I take my headgear (helmets, hoods, masks, etc) off indoors.
- I take off my armor/combat gear when I'm at home, and put it back on when I leave to do more adventure-ing.

I love that song. Big Iron on his hip, I mean. Fallout has good music. I miss F3 music though.
