War Staffs.
Instead of changing all kinds of magic stats and perks, simply add a viable conduit for those spells, stats and and perks. Face it, the staffs on Skyrim are little more than glorified spell scrolls with a little more juice. But, if a new type of staff were to be included within an update, prefferably a dlc with a vackstory, tgings would change a lot with very little sacrifice. The idea is to treat these new staffs like a combination between a two handed weapon, and a bow, with any equiped spell functioning as arrows.
To clarify further, a bow is a two handed ranged weapon with various sources of missiles, we know this, so ask yourself, why should a staff be any different in this aspect? Simply equip a war staff and instead of being stuck on a fixed spell, choose from any spell you have in your possession.
So you might ask, how the heck can this make a difference, let alone 'perfect' the magic system. Well, I figure that these new staffs come with various perks to increase usefulness. Allow for magic to cost less with the use of these staffs, allow magic to be more powerful while using staffs and allow for new powerful spells to be used only with these staffs. These are just basic upgrades but I am sure you can see the usefulness of these versatile and powerful staffs. While some form of perk tree would be nice its not really nessecary, passive perks earned through training with some faction would suffice.
No on to the melee aspects. The major pitfall of the mages is that in close quarters they are demolished very quickly due to inability to fend off melee attacks and little protection provided by robes. The solution I have come up with is switching the function of the staff once spells are unequiped, much like the vampire lord switches from spells to melee modes. With this a mage can take advantage of basic block perks such as quick reflexes to either effectivley block melee or avoid attacks altogether. A mage can also deal blunt damage by smacking foes upside the head with regular attacks and power attacks, with damage either being decided by twohanded skill level and perks or from the amount of magic you possess. The animations and finishers would not only look and feel cool, but provide much needed front line support.
Lastly my thoughts turn to a crafting element for these staffs. Of course youd need material, then youd need some powersource like a jewel or shard, then there would probably be ddifferent designs people would want for their own pleasure. The material could determine the base melee damage like any other weapon and the magical core could provide the power output of spells.
Let me know what you guys think. Bethesda has been pretty good on giving fans what they want so if you guys think that this addition is gold then lets all let Bethesda know we like it. Its a win win situation, Bethesda gets more money, buisness and reputation while we get awesome new content focused on empowering mages. Peace.
