Post » Tue Nov 06, 2012 1:54 pm

Uhm ... so I felt like joining identi.ca, so I did. Uhm ... how the hell does one post messages?

on the http://identi.ca/main/top, enter your message into the textbox at the top of the page, and click "Send"

I don't see a text box or anything. Anyone know?

What's Identi.ca?

But it's probably that part where it says "PUBLIC TIMELINE" in big letters. It's probably not responding properly with your browser. The same thing happens to me with the recent eBay updates, but then again I might just be stupid.

It's like Twitter, but better, because it doesn't have advertising and such.

I tried Firefox, tried IE. I don't see a textbox. Clicking "PUBLIC TIMELINE" doesn't do anything, either.

I feel like I'm missing something really elementary ...

I feel dumb. Hahah ...

Then, on the public timeline, enter your message into the textbox at the top of the page, and click "Send". It will go out on the public timeline and to anyone who is subscribed to your notices.

That's all I got without actually signing up, sorry.

Aside from no advertising is there anything else useful about it?

That's doubtful. Twitter has been around forever, and advertisemants are rare on Twitter. There are the occasional "promoted" tweets which people pay to show to everyone (which you can ignore or dismiss, you don't get informed, it just pops up on your news feed with the other tweets) and that's about it. Twitter is actually pretty unadvertised, now that I think about it. It's so much more popular, easy to remember, and fun. I've never even heard of Identi.ca until today and doubt it has so much traction so as to be something interesting. (I first joined Twitter in like 2009 before my friends did and it was blah because there was nothing to do, but now it blew up in popularity in my area so it's "the thing" now. I don't think this will happen with Identi.ca. It looks like a side-network, like FunForMobile. You know, one of those that you're not really sure if they're real or not? Like that. :P

XMPP support, open source, and identi.ca is better for group communication.

Identi.ca has more of a geek userbase which appeals to some. It's primarily used by programmers and open source activists, so the content is more geek-skewed. A comparison could be made that Identi.ca is to Twitter as Google+ is to Facebook though that's glossing over a number of things (ratio-wise Google+ is more popular than identi.ca and Google+ isn't open source whereas Identi.ca is to point out two things glossed over)
