Mod Tools for ESO? [merged similar topics]

Post » Sat Nov 10, 2012 2:45 pm

Do you think it would be good to open the Construction Set for people to develop new stuff? It will not be modding, since the ESO staff will curate all the information and select only the good stuff to be on the game. Like DOTA2 is doing.

I would say that it is a good idea to do that, so the devs can get some fresh input from the community. But only if it sticks to pre-established lore. I don't want to be able to ride dragons because some guy pitched it to the devs and they thought it would be cool. I highly doubt that would ever happen, though :P

Even though I think this would be awesome it will never happen because this is an MMO. Everything needs to be the same for everyone as far as content is concerned. But giving ideas to devs thats what the forums are for.

Yes, IIRC Star Trek Online got some sort of level editor.

And Neverwinter also has a similar system.

I do hope the game is at least as moddable as WoW, that'd be very cool to see. WoW had a ton of useful mods and a ton of role-play friendly and immersion mods that worked pretty well. http://www.curse.com/addons/wow - good lord, 5,641 mods...

With TES' history of being so moddable I hope they would make some concessions to this end. Having both the WoW moddability, which was most cosmetic, and UI-based utility mods, AND the content moddability that both Neverwinter and SOE are touting would IMO be a huge boon for the game. I know Neverwinter will have a rating system so that people can "test" the content and review it. Of course there are limitations in terms of game balance and lore, so you can't make some crazy nuke-launcher weapon that you have to fight Dr Robotnik to get but within a set of limitations, I still think it could be very rewarding indeed.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but I hear this expressed a lot, in different contexts. Why does everything have to be the same for everyone in an MMO, exactly?

Two sentences hardly qualify as a tangent ;)

To answer your question... they just do. Not very helpful, I know lol. An MMO is a beast of a different nature from a single player game.

It doesn't, it is just the easiest solution to the common buzzword of "balance." There are ways to make things interesting, dynamic and balanced in an MMO, and not necessarily homogeneous, but that usually takes a lot more work on the part of the developers.

I read Richard Bartle's "Designing Virtual Worlds" about 7 years ago, and just finished re-reading today. It's amazing to be reminded of his (and my) expectations of MMOs back then, and of how far we haven't come. In fact, the genre seems to have regressed - and what's worse, players seem to be ok with that.

Here's hoping TESO gets some sort of user-generated content kit in a future update.

User generated content would be an awesome addition to ESO. However, I would want it to be regulated fairly heavily. I wouldn't want items that didn't go with the lore to make their way into the game.

Thats not what I meant. Look a lot of people use that terminology yes. but I had explained in my post. BECAUSE everyone is on one server and even with phasing it would be ridiculously hard to allow every player to edit the world the way they want to..the engine wouldn't even allow it unless it's a UI change.

probably not, but perhaps we can share some ideas that fit the lore.

I used some interface mods back during burning crusade in WoW they really did improve the UI. No need for an aggro table mod since aggro's gone in this game. And zenimax seems very invested in making the perfect UI, so I feel that mods may not be necessary for the game.

I doubt they will , certainly not items and other game mechanics related items, it would only unbalance the game
however like mentioned above , things that have no influence on game play like new armour textures , UI overhauls is not a bad idea but i doubt they will allow it
I don't think they would allow scantly dressed/topless elfmaidens run around in thier world

Again... MMO's are already allowing players to submit designs to add player-made items into their games. This thread is not about UI mods, it's about items and content.

Elderscrolls has a huge modding history and so many modders have created things past and present that have breathed new life into the games.

I wonder if there is room in an MMO to allow modding of some kind?

It would be great if there was some kind of Greenlight project like steam has .Instead the best mods could be showcased and a player vote select the ones that the dev team could incorporate at a timeline of their choosing. There could even be a seperate beta build of the game where these mods can be tested.

This way Bethesda can have free player made content added to the game.

Even if it was just created quests or new dungeons these mods would fill the gap between official expansions.

It definately would be a first for an MMO to allow player made content to be incorporated into the game.

It could be great way to stop the lvl50 duldrums.

It would be great to hear from a developer if what is possible in a single player game can be aswell incorporated into an MMO.

Not entirely true. You can re-skin (use custom textures) almost anything in Guild Wars 1 for example. It's not officially supported but the devs have confirmed that it's allowed and not considered hacking

The only way for someone to "mod" an MMORPG would be to either add custom skins to the UI or models, which are on all your PC, but 90% of all the other content is in the server so you can't really mod it.

its an MMO still with their own servers, steam has nothing to do with TESO. (in some cases its a good thing).

any addon that is made for TESO and played by one player, basicly is there for every player.

so its a bit problematic to make it so that everyone likes the player made content in question.

Mods are more of a single player experience boosters (more quality to the game and replayability). => Oblivion => Skyrim style.

I absolutely think player "mods" should be in the game in the form of user-generated content. Take a look at STO and the upcoming Neverwinter game's Foundry, or the Mission Architect for one of those superhero MMOs I've never played. I'd like to see something like that integrated into the world (perhaps you could have a checkbox allowing or disabling NPCs giving you user-generated quests).

If you read the FAQ, stickied at the top of this forum, you would have read that at launch they don't plan to have modding in TESO. However at some point they plan on allowing mods for UI and a few other things...

This topic was already recently brought up... but as other have pointed out, a handful of MMOs are allowing players to design their own in-game items. EQ2 being one of them. Then a lot of them have custom dungeon makers as well.

It's up to Zenimax if they will allow UI mods to work with their game. Personally, I would rather they not have things like Gear Score and damage meters and all that crap in this game.
