There's something that confuses me about Skyrim...

Post » Tue Nov 13, 2012 2:09 am

I love the game and I'm certainly not going to complain, but there's something that never added up for me about Windhelm.

I always play TES as an Argonian on my first pass. Since Argonians aren't allowed in the city, shouldn't it have been harder for me to get into Windhelm?

You're mistakin' Bethesda for CD-Projekt maybe? Everything shall bend to make the player feel like God even if it doesn't make sense in the local context.

Don't be silly... god forbid the game actually be harder for some charcaters than others. Bethesda have no idea how to make quest pecific content based upon your race, gender, past actions etc and are to afraid of locking content out based upon your character

How many times do you here it mentioned that Khajiit are not allowed into cities because they are not trusted and then I as a Khajiit walk in as if I am a regular Nord

I wish consequences were to have an impact on gameplay.

Gameplay trumps logic, in almost all video games. If the player of an Argonian (or Khajiit) was not able to enter cities their game would not be fun.

But it would be fun if race changed gameplay, just by a bit. For example cats and lizards could either bribe the guards or have a small but fun quest to gain their trust.

Speak for yourself. Having to sneak in and out of cities through sewers etc would be very fun and not just for Khajiit or Argoninans but for regular theif characters as well trying to avoid the city guards.

Fun in what is suppossed to be an immersive game means there should be at least some logic involved not just mindless forgetfulness on the part of the NPC's

I think the bribe would be a good idea.

And I like it when Baalgruf and his brother discusses the power of the voice, and I shout Fus to impress them and show them the truth, then a guard comes up "Stop with that shouting"...

I thought the Nords would be HAPPY for me!

It probably would be fun, but Bethesda is probably afraid of THAT ONE OLD GUY who bought Skyrim from Wal-Mart, and goes into a panic attack because the game was too confusing and difficult for his non-Nord character, and "it's broken OMG, I'm gonna call tech support and whine and demand a refund". So they dumb it down and ruin immersion for everyone else.

Yeah, forget about logic and consequences here :P

The best you can do is try to rationalise the irrational here:
- like Richard.Jonasson suggested, imagine that you've managed to bribe the guards;
- you're a mage and every time you approach a city, you put up an illusion spell which makes everyone think you're actually of a human or mer race (if you're not a mage, imagine you're drinking a potion);
- you can also mask yourself (ugh.... pretend that tail is not sticking out from beneath your clothes/armor); or
- this one is relly stretched, but imagine the word has spread about Helgen and as a survivor and witness you are granted access to cities by way of an exception.

This is definitely one of the things that I want improved in the future games: race based content triggers. Not necessarily exclusive content for each race, but locked content that can be unlocked only by completing relevant questlines (earn their trust before they let you in/join, something along the city reputation in Gothic 3). Maybe you'll be the first Argonian allowed because you earned their trust, maybe you'll do extra quests to improve the status of the other egg brothers. Maybe your Khajiit wife (i know right) will be the first Khajiit allowed in the city and church, because you helped her complete relevant quests to clear her reputation. The game would offer all sorts of radiant tools to feel like your race does matter.

Would it require a lot of work? Hell yea, but this is TES, this is Bethesda, 5 year development cycles, hello, one can demand highly modular content.

The only thing that changes due to race is the comments from guards and [censored].

"What is it, Khajiit?"
"What is it, elf"?

Thats the difference on guard-comments from my Khajiit and High elf.

I think it is more about economics than accessibility.

If they made content for only a few players, and of those players only a few actually completed the content, then you are talking about the law of diminishing returns. They have to budget their resources when deciding which content to make - and the question that probably is asked is,"Is it worth doing this if only 1% of 1% of players are going to do it?"

Gone are the days when there would be secet hidden quests in video games - nowadays it's "THIS WAY TO THE SECRET UNDERGROUND HIDEOUT!"

No, It shouldn't be harder. Especially if you are Roleplaying. You have forbidden yourself to do anything with the Government/Guards. All you want is a nice Family in Any City/ Windhelm

Orcs get an extra line of dialogue about how they are not a proper orc when you go to Orcish strongholds.

You also get a line. Which probably more than half of the community gets at the Mine.

You're not allowed here. You're not an Orc

There should also be one race-specific town and quest.line per race!

A safe haven for example cats or lizards with a questline that involes getting cats or lizards more accepted in skyrim, or having them commit crimes against nords!

it would be nice for any race to have a place feel like home. Cats have tha caravan, thats the place that feels most at home for my khajiit.
Nords have all the holds, so the lesser races should have a small town which only those races can enter.

Yeah that would be nice. No extreme 100 hour storyline , just maybe a 10 min quest.

Exactly, nothing game-breaking just one small quesline that explains more about the race and it's culture. No super-reward or anything, just a nice story to experience

Hehe, I based my whole playtrough on that.
In Lakeview Manor there are 6 advlt Khajiit + 2 khajiit kids. Additionally, 4 Khajiit neighbors living next door in Pinewatch.

So, it can be done without official support, needs only a bit of creativity, several mods and some meddling with CK
