Firstly these are just my ideas, it's not been confirmed that the even is going to be an Arena. Ideally this would be a standalone DLC.
If we get an arena it doesn't have to be too complicated...but also it can't be too simple because people will get bored with it really easy.
As your rank in the arena grows so does the gold you earn but also how difficult your enemies are, if you don't want it to be so challenging you i think you should have the option to set it to a lower difficulty- but you wouldn't get paid as much.
When you talk to the Blademaster he gives you 4-5 options of what kind of round you want to participate in, a window pops up an you can choose between:
- A team battle where you and 3 NPC's fight off another team of 4.
- A beast hunt where you and a NPC have to fight all kinds of creatures from around skyrim, trolls, sabre cats, wolves, spriggans etc
- A mock battle where you alone re-act a certain battle from TES lore, Has the been any famous sea battles? the could be two ships in the middle of the arena and you have to board and kill everyone on board, you have to enter the ship just like a dungeon, another idea is depending obviously on which side you fought for in the CW quest you have to be on the opposite side to whichever one you sided with, I'm sure theres loads of famous battles but my TES lore isn't up to scratch.
- A free for all round where you are on your own-meaning kill everything that moves!
- A duel- this would be unlocked when you complete all of the other rounds and it would be really difficult! you would be matched with someone your own level and with decent equipment which is upgraded.
I don't really feel the Arena needs a quest line as such, there's already so many great quests in Skyrim, as long as it's fun an provides a challenge for the long time player but also the rookie then i feel that it would serve it's purpose, however i did think that the could be a Spartacus type slave revolt quest line?
Like i said this is just my idea, feel free to provide some constructive criticism!
