Bioware: Mass Effect Controversy and the Future of Gaming

Post » Wed Nov 14, 2012 4:34 am

Its been a while since the whole ME3 debacle and I was wondering how everyone is feeling. Have you bought ME3 DLC, did you like it? Will you buy Dragon Age 3? How has the ME3 controversy affected the way you view games, not the least of which those made by Bethesda?

For myself:
My favorite gaming franchises have been TES, ME, DA, Assassin's Creed, and Fallout. I was outraged at the ME ending, not overly thrilled with AC3 so far, and am nervous about DA3. Hopeful for FO4.

I personally boycott all EA games, I boycott a lot of products, Nestle for example. The last EA game I brought was DA2. I was disappointed in the ending of ME3. I don't usually get DLC unless it is a proper expansion pack, like SI. I really can't stand day one DLC either. The cheek. Needless to say I won't be buying ME4. Plus Origins and other horrors no thanks.

Edit: Just a note on the 'future' of gaming, I actually think things are looking okay. I'm hoping in the coming years companies start getting bitten on the bum for treating their customers like rubbish and with kick starter and crowd funding (titles like Project Eternity, Star Citizen and such) I'm pretty okay with the direction things are going. Sooner or later these companies are going to realise DRM and other rubbish doesn't actually stop piracy and only punishes the people who actually pay and then things will be better too :)

As much as I would love to play ME 3 having enjoyed 1 & 2 I have yet to purchase the game and likely never will. I hate EA, I hate when companies milk products as they did witht he dlc for ME 3.

I am unsure if I will get DA 3 either after the disappointment that was DA 2

I don't play Bioware games, just looking at YouTube videos of DA2 and ME3 make me sick. I fully support such [censored]storms like this ME one because it reinforces the idea that you deserve to get quality content for 60 dollars or so, and also they expose how corrupt gaming journalism truly is. This will hopefully affect Bethesda in a positive way and will make Fallout 4 and the rest of the Skyrim DLCs actually worth giving a crap about.

ME has never interested me and I doubt it ever will, so I missed most of the drama surrounding the ending of ME3. I will be buying DA3, on release day most likely, because I'm one of those people who did like DA2 a lot and I'm dying to know how the story continues! The whole mages-vs-templars thing, I love it.

Hopeful for FO4.
*Looks at Skyrim*

Well prepare to be disappointed.

Halo 4's story is done well, but the consensus seems to be that it is only good if you understand the expanded universe.

The future of the video game industry doesn't hinge over any particular person's opinion about whether modern games are "great" or not. Myself included.

The undeniable fact is that the industry is bigger than it has ever been and is getting bigger every day.

Pretty much this. Gaming sales, especially for yearly release titles, are through the roof. I mean, Halo 4 made 220 million in the first day. The first day! Thats crazy. And Black Ops 2 is set to become the biggest selling title of all time. If crap continues to make money, game companies will continue to make crap.

I'm basically done with Bioware. I love DAO and ME, I didn't think much of ME2. It was fun, but the only thing I ever wanted to replay it for was the suicide mission. I saw what they were doing with DA2 and avoided it like the plague, and as soon as they put multiplayer in ME3 Bioware lost my money, yes it really was that simple. It'll take a miracle to get me to buy DA3.

As far as Bioware goes, considering the reaction to DA2 and ME3, and Bioware's reaction to that reaction, I figure if DA3 bombs then they're finished, EA will just fold them.

As for the future of gaming, I reckon in 3-5 years the games market will basically collapse under the weight of bland, indistinct crap pumped out by every developer trying to maximise sales by appealing to everyone possible.

I'm leery of Bioware games, but not because of ME3(To me, whining about an ending is the dumbest thing ever. I don't care how bad it may have been, demanding that it be changed is stupid, and that's all I'm saying on the subject, I will not respond to any comments on my statement), but because of how shoddy the X-Pac for DA, and how bad DA2 was. That many bugs, including some gamebreaking ones that they flat out said they could not/would not fix(I mean, if you didn't read the forums, you'd have never known not to do something in the X-pac for DA, and you'd be screwed, having to restart everything) is nearly unforgivable. Still, I've enjoyed many past Bioware games, and if appears that they put some of their old love into a new game, I'll probably pick it up some time after release. I"ll just never first-day buy anything from them ever again.

Bioware games are pretty much dead to me. I might play a future ME game just because of the amount of time I've invested into the series, but I'm very unlikely to invest any more money. The first DA was interesting and would play another like it. DA2 was a bit of a deviant, and it looks as if they are content to follow the path that DA2 has started on.

Unless Mass Effect 3 becomes available on Steam, I won't buy it. Enjoyed the first two, though.

(looks at thread responses...... really? :ermm:)

Have I bought any ME3 DLC? No, but that's not because of any ending controversy, it's just because of the actual ending (I don't see any point in The Further Adventures Of Shepard?, when
Spoiler
it's all going to end in flames regardless

But I still think the frothing psychotic ragefit the internet worked itself up into over the ME3 ending was stupid. And Bioware buckling to the whining masses was a bad move - now the legions of internet forumdwellers have the idea that they can moan until they get their way. Not good.

DA3? As with almost all games, it'll depend on news & previews. If it looks interesting, I might get it. I finally got around to DA2, and I'm not sure what the big fuss was - yeah, it wasn't The Greatest Game Ever, but it was pretty good. (It might help that I'm not in love with DA:O. Again, not the greatest, just pretty good. So I wasn't expecting the second coming from DA2.)

Personally, I don't go out for the whole "OMG, Has Betrayed Me!? They're dead to me from now on!" drama that seems to work it's way around. If a game is good, and the topic & genre interest me, I might buy it. If a game turns out not so good, that doesn't mean I won't give the next one a chance. Just that I'll likely look a little closer at reviews.

I agree completely, that cave-in was a really bad thing to happen. And "stupid" is a huge understatement :hehe:

As for their further titles, as always, wait and see how they turn out, but i did like both ME3 and DA2.
