After a couple of times only being able to find hod in his house I wondered if it was a glitch, this was confirmed when he went out into his garden and started doing the animation for lifting a log off the pile in the middle of the air. He is currently the only lumber mill owner I've been to so I don't know if this is only limited to him or not.
