I read it happens slowly overtime rather then instantly like when you craft it yourself.

I fast traveled around a bit, but there was no changes at all =s i will post back if anything changes, but i wont get my hopes up, especially since even if you furnish the house completely by yourself, your steward still has the option to furnish all rooms, even if they are completed...

For 30K you have asked them to furnish everything but the cellar. I only managed to get one new furnishing built each time I returned to the property. You should probably only ask for one area at a time to be furnished, and just wait for the steward to finish it before confusing the situation by asking for so much to be built. Even building it yourself, you go from one room to another building stuff, the game will stuff up.

Edit
Apparently they will furnish it if you wait long enough, so my character Braggen is setting the next two steward's up to furnish everything above ground, and going back to finish off his vampire side quests, in the hopes of getting a more peaceful life without Dawnguard pests making a nuisance of themselves. It stuffs up he can always start again and do it himself.

I did the same thing, I saw no changes. Maybe I will try again and see if anything happens.

The only Jarl or steward I've ever talked to about furnishing my house was in Whiterun, for Breezehome. I paid for the Alchemy lab but it was never "built." I went back, again and again, paying 500 gold, again and again, but it's still just a dusty corner full of cobwebs. All the other options were furnished, but making my own drugs must be illegal under the long arm of Dragonsreach. All of this was going on long before I loaded Hearthfire.

Was that before or after you loaded *Dawnguard*, though? Dawnguard broke the Breezehome Alchemy furnish, and Hearthfire reportedly fixes it again. Retry purchase under HF?

It was before I loaded Dawnguard, but after 1.7.

The first two character playthroughs of Breezehome and Whiterun saw the Alchemy lab installed, no problem. But I haven't tried visiting the steward now, since loading Dawnguard and Hearthfire. I'm sure my Breezehome housecarl would love to mix up some potions ... maybe something to loosen her up and get that plate mail off. Lydia could use some love, no doubt.

Braggen is currently stalking his Lydia, who is supposedly his steward for Heljarchen Hall, seems she has other plans though. Braggen is getting annoyed that no furnishing of the entryway has been done, seems Lydia is usually not even at the house, turns up at bedtime and then promptly goes out the upper door on a walk to the Honningbrew Meadery. The steward on the playthrough before Ria also vanished, and went places she was not meant to be. The one I tried before that, Annekke Crag Jumper never even went in the house and never made it to the Meadery she just got lost and wandered everywhere but the house she was meant to be looking after. None of them was any good at home furnishing, must be all this drinking they are doing on the sly. I think even the first steward I tried there Aela went missing for a long time, but she was never asked to furnish anything, and after Braggen ordered all the upgrades she was not missed. But she did eventually turn up when the family moved in.

I wonder if I have to do that to get Lydia to stay home and do some work?

Braggen is having fun with his stewards, having tried three different stewards for Heljarchen Hall, and having them all decide they want to go do something other than looking after the house, he finally decided Lydia the last one just had to die, she was fired after about a month of not furnishing. The previous two survived by reloading a save game and trying someone else. Went and promoted the resident housecarl Gregor to steward, and instantly most of the furniture for the entryway appears. Happily went off decorating elsewhere, but was feeling guilty about Lydia.

Wanted to investigate some house decorating options with a new room, so loaded a slightly older save, where Lydia was presumably still AWOL. And yet when I visited Heljarchen Hall, the furnishings that had been there on my latest save were all there, as was Lydia, bright and chirpy. No more missing steward. I will continue with the older save and see if she can actually put the two little entrance tables and the weapon racks in the entryway to finish it off. If not, Braggen is going to kill her again, get Gregor to put them in and then time warp back again. The doormat and extra bench do look nice, now I have finally seen them. But I think it would be less annoying just to do without them and furnish the entryway myself, rather than ask the steward to.

Oh you :P but yes, pretty true atm with the PS3 users...

For some reason on my main save file the progress is veeery slow, but on my new character when i asked Faendal to furnish it was done pretty damn fast... :ermm: bleh.
