Hearthfire looks great, but how much true customization will

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:45 pm

First off, I'd just like to say that I'm super excited for this DLC, houses/homes are one of my favorite part of the TES games, and I absolutely loved the past home DLCs in Oblivion, particularly Frostcrag Spire. Now we actually get to build our own home(s), and it looks great, but seeing as we only have a small amount of info, I have some concerns for the depth of customization and amount of options we will have.

1. House layout- From what was shown in the trailer, it appears as though we may not have the option to decide which rooms go where. As the PC was flipping through the house manual, it showed that certain rooms were relegated to certain locations, such as "West Wing: Greenhouse" and "West Wing: Enchanter's tower", which leads me to assume we won't be able to put them in whichever order/format we want, and that there will be a limit to how many of each room is created. I really don't want it to turn out that there will be one basic house that can be built, so that once you've finished it, each house will be exactly the same on all your characters.

2. House Style- What I'd like to see is different options for the basic architecture style, so that we won't simply be limited to the basic wooden Nord style shown in the trailer. It'd be spectacular to be able to choose to build from wood or stone, and even to choose from modern Nordic style, ancient Nordic style, or even Dwemer, Falmer, Foreign and Daedric concepts. I'd at least like the option to give them the basic aesthetic styles of the various holds.

2.5 House Style- a chance for depth and story: One of the things I liked about the minor DLC in Oblivion was that there were multiple housing options for different character archetypes. For the Mage, there was Frostcrag Spire, the Warrior had Battlehorn Castle, the Thief had Dunbarrow Cove, and the Murderer/Assassin/Vampire had Deepscorn Hollow. Not only were these specifically designed to offer special items, services and perks for each play style, they each had unique back-stories associated with them, and they offered definitive atmospheres that aided in roleplaying. I know they likely won't add much to this DLC once it's out, but what I'd absolutely love to see is the addition of unmarked (or marked if necessary) mini-quests, which would lead you to the plans for certain house layouts/rooms along these archetypal lines, for each of the basic playstyles, and once you found them (along with associated notes and diaries), you could add truly unique items to your house, like the shrine to Sithis in Deepscorn Hollow, and throughout the quests, you would find unique items like the sword in the hidden tomb in Battlehorn Castle. Unless we're getting more small house DLC, I'd like to have these options so we can have the houses to suit each of our characters.

3. House/Room/Wing Size- Will there be limits to how many stories our house is? With enough funds, will I be able to make it into a full-size fort or castle? Will I be able to make my tower more than two/three stories tall, as seen in the trailer? Will I be able to build just the tower, without all the other rooms, simply to suit the simple desires of my Mage and Alchemist characters, or will I have to build a certain number of rooms and wings before I can place the tower, and be stuck with the unwanted sections?

4. House Editing- Seeing as most of us are fickle and we often change our minds frequently, will we have the option to remove rooms from our houses, and re-work the layout, to better suit our wants and needs?

5. House Location- So far, it appears there are only 3 options for where we can put our houses. I'd love nothing more than to be able to place my house up on High Hrothgar somewhere, or along the Northern Coast. I know there's only so many clear spaces, but I know there's going to be lots of people who want a location not included in the initial options.

I believe that's all I really care about for now, and we won't really have any answers til Tuesday, when those who have it on X-box will get there hands on it, and share the info contained therein. I leave it now to you all to comment, and offer your own ideas and opinions.

Actually that can imply the opposite, this IS not the Sims no matter what the whiners say so the only way to place rooms is to select it out of a book or similar menu. We may simpy build the house one wing at a time. One of the pictures of a completed house appears to show the enchanters tower at the back end of the house not at the side which would indicate it can go in more places then the west wing.

So rather then pick a room and decide a location we may simply pick a location and decide what room goes there.

There's no way of knowing at this point. In a day and change, we will know. Bethesda may have a few surprises in store for us... :)

Do you have a source or is this personal speculation?

West Wing - Greenhouse

I am pretty sure you can't move it.

That's what I'm hoping for, to be able to say take the room's design from a manual, then bring it to the drafting table, select the spot you want to build on, and scroll through the list of available rooms. I just think it wouldn't make much sense to be able to build your own house if you don't have the option to make it unique.

I'm pretty much thinking along the same lines, just hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised with lots of customization. That said, as most of my characters are Nords(as they have been since morrowind), it should be fine for me anyway.

West Wing - Greenhouse

Way to miss the point. What I'm saying is instead of selecting the room and picking where it goes. We pick the location and select what goes there. Which is why during the trailer we only see "west wing" as he's scrolling through the book. I've seen a picture of a completed house where the enchanters tower is on the north end. Indicating we have more options.

Im not too ecstatic for Hearthfire because its catering more towards the typical Nord Dragonborn Hero. Its not a bad thing, being one of my characters is a typical Nord, but the vampire Dark Elf im playing as now wouldnt have any place with a Nordic looking home, building it, having adopted kids, etc. i wish there was options for more evil characters.

Basically everything is speculation, unless you saw it on the trailer or read it on gamesas's website. My advice would be to wait one more day, and find out for yourself/from other players.

The good thing about this DLC is that we likely won't have to avoid spoilers. :D

I don't find that at all. My Breton Mage would love to own her own house, and loves the many different Nordic architectures. My necromancer would love the chance to build his own 'fortress' (by which I mean secluded home) in the swamps of Hjaalmarch.

Not sure i want to waste money on this DLC, building house and adopting kids srsly if that's the best Bethesda can come up with then they really have to work on their creativity, what about a new questline a real like SI or at the very least like Dawnguard so i rly hope there's more to it.

It's pretty standard in TES to give small house DLCs (if you can call it that after just Oblivion), there will be more meaty DLCs as well, this is just a tidbit to make waiting for the larger content a bit easier. Lots of people love these small add-ons, but of course you don't have to get it if you don't want to, that's the beauty of Downloadable Content

Yeah, because Bethesda can just poop out Dawnguard-sized DLCs every month ...

What I just wrote in a similar thread:
I hope I have the option of placing individual items, all I want is a small house with the crafting stations and a few other misc things like a horse stable.

I don't want to have to dedicate a whole new room to enchanting, which is what the video suggests.

I'd also like a way of improving my horse, so it can take a hit or two. Shadowmere is perfect, except you have to be generic 'evil' to get her. Arvak just doesn't look right for 'good' characters.
