Getting Elder Scrolls before main Skyrim quest.

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 7:49 pm

I read in another post that if you get the Dragon scroll before doing it in the main story that it breaks the quest? I just gathered the Elder Scrolls for the Dawnguard quest but I have yet to start Skyrim's main quest. Did I just screw my self?

Agreed. I'm on my second character and really want to be able to do the MQ.

That may or may not be true, but getting quest items like these before you're supposed to does tend to break the quest that they are related to. Obviously they are assuming that all players who are embarking on the Dawnguard questline have already completed the MQ of the base game. They may fix it in future, but I'm not certain if things like this can be fixed, though, at least not without having to lock you from continuing the Dawnguard questline until you get to that point in the vanilla MQ, which isn't going to be an overly popular decision. But neither is making the questline in a way that you can break the MQ of the base game, so they've got themselves a very big problem on their hands, not to mention a kind of poor design decision to make both questlines rely on the same exact quest item. That is if there actually is a bug.

The possible bug is mentioned in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1389814-dawnguard-bug-list-1/

Breaks which quest? Skyrim's main quest? No not the slightest people get that elderscroll before the main quest calls for it all the time. In fact, after my first playthrough I always end up getting the elderscroll long before the MQ calls for it. NOW it is possible the scroll isn't usable for Dawnguard until after its been used on the MQ, but I don't believe you lose the scrolls in the process of the DG quest line so nothing should stop it from functioning normally.

Retreiving the elderscroll before Parthanax asks you to never interfered with the MQ before Dawnguard so it be really weird for that to change. If this http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1389814-dawnguard-bug-list-1/page__st__120__p__21137388#entry21137388 is to be believed the bug doesn't exist everything will function as it always did when you got the elderscroll before the Parthanax asks you to.

So in other words, you're saying it's just another rumor like the one where vampires in Dawnguard no longer have fangs (which is false AFAIK, I've been hearing that the fangs are still there, and it's just certain NPCs like Harkon who doesn't have fangs). Looks like there is some need to do some verification here, in order to make certain that it isn't breaking anything (which it probably isn't, but if it is, then it needs to be proven and reported).

I'm saying despite completing the main quest six or seven times. I've only waited to get the elderscroll until after meeting Parthanax once. The first time through the game I didn't get the elderscroll until Parthanax told me to find it, everytime since then I've retrieved the elderscroll before speaking with Pathanax. Now maybe Dawnguard introduced a bug but retrieving the scroll ahead of time has never been a problem before.

Now if this bug is real, there's a bright side it would enough for Bethesda to pull the DLC and reupload it so they can fix the bug, and if their fixing that bug they can fix a few others along with it.

Getting the Elder Scroll before you're directed to on the Skyrim Main Quest will not screw up your game. A common misconception is that Discerning the Transmundane (the Daedric Quest that allows you to get the Elder Scroll) is part of the Main Quest. In actuality, it isn't, and can be done at any time before the Main Quest. If you already have it when Paarthurnax tells you to get it, the quest will progress normally.

I've gotten the dragon scroll before doing the main quest several times, though all of those were before Dawnguard. None of them broke the quest, when you learn you need a scroll you just get an option saying you already have one or something along those lines.
