What these 'rot shadows' do?

I can't see any picture difference between ON and OFF.

It's RAT shadows. If you get too much slowdown when there are a lot of rats onscreen, you can turn off their shadows for improved performance.

I have small monitor and misread because of that :( Thanks for explanation.I would figure it quite fast but damn 17" monitor.
