A Plea: Grain Filter

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 5:19 am

I really, really want to play this game. I have been following it since the second I heard about it, gobbled up all info I possibly could, pre-ordered it even though chances are it will show up on insiders.

I have one issue I literally can not get passed though:

Grain.

In games like Left4Dead and Mass Effect, there is a option to turn "Film Grain" or whatever the game is calling it off. In games with no option, you can usually tweak the ini file to be able to play without it. (I play on PC, if it wasn't obvious yet).

I'm not here to debate whether or not grain is a good design choice, or insult anyone over anything, I am just begging...does anyone know how to disable this? I have gone through the ini file in My Games\DishonoredGame\Config and I can just not figure out how to do so. My problem is that grain filters make me physically ill, my eyes can seem to refuse to focus on any given point, and it makes me sick to the point I have to stop playing.

So please...if anyone has a idea to turn this off, please let me know. It is terrible to have this game and not be able to play it unless I limit myself to short little 10-15 min plays with breaks between.

o wow, thats a first. i have the PC version but i dont remember anything specifically related to grain filter. you may just want to try and play the game on low setting cuz even then the game looks pretty good visually. that and maybe turn down the brightness. im mean dont get me wrong im far from being an eye doctor, but perhaps if the brightness is lowered and (assuming you have a laptop) you turn down the brightness of the backlight then maybe your iris will take in less light and therein even out the whole motion sickness feeling. i've never gotten sick from playing a game due to its visual effects, but i cant read and ride at the same time so i can sorta emphathize.

I've played with all the various settings both in the game and in the ini file, and I can't find anything that removes the grain/noise/static from the game. I'm playing on a PC (desktop) and while I am fine for pretty much anything else in any other game (low FOV, the notorious Mirrors Edge, etc) for some reason my eyes just freak out at that constantly moving grain. It's very subtle in this game, sometimes in certain areas I don't even feel it at all. Other times tho, it will start to do it on a dark or bright texture and then its just...F5, alt-f4, try not to be sick. :(

This is unfortunate, I'm not a fan of grain either, I quite dislike it and always turn it off. IIRC, FEAR2 had a lot complaints regarding this so they added a "disable grain" option later with a patch.

Haven't been able to play Dishonored yet though, so I can't comment about the grain in this game or if I find it annoying, as Steam won't unlock it here in Europe until the 12th. But I do hope someone have a fix by then. I do find the grain less and less annoying the higher resolution I play at though.

The only possible solution I can think of is fiddling with the config file. (Would the config file contain directions for grain filter?)

Go to %USERDIR%Documentsmy gamesDishonoredDishonoredGameConfig
Open DishonoredEngine.ini

Look around for something that looks like it might be a grain filter, and change it from =1 to =0.

Just remember to make a copy of the .ini file so that if you mess something up you can revert to the original settings.

No offence, but I've already stated twice in this thread that I have looked through the ini. I'm familiar with configuring UT engine games, but I see nothing related to grain, filters (that I could change) or noise in the ini. The only thing that I see that could *maybe* effect it, since grain is usually a post processing effect is:

DefaultPostProcessName=AltScreen_Effects.PostProcessChain.Test_PPG

And I'm not sure if that would even change it, and even if it would, I don't know of any other valid variables I could put there.

I've got nothing then. Never mind.

wow , it"S just becuz someone pointed it out this game has grain i would not have noticed it.
i"m playing this on my old laptop at 1280*800 and it"S hardly noticeable imho.
still , an option to turn it off would be welcome .... i guess.

btw. i"m experimenting with all kinds of enb-configs to make the game more shiny , less colourfull and darker.
will post pics soon.

There is grain?! I'm looking for it and I don't see it (nor do I see it in any of the screenshots people have posted).

There is a distinct noise/static filter. It sometimes is hard to see because it blends in very well with the art style, but on certain textures it is very much so there.
