Hope this doesn't sound too much of a stupid question...

Basically, how does Dawnguard "fit" into Skyrim's world? Is there a new map? Are the Dawnguard locations on the existing Skyrim map somewhere?

Is it a separate game? Or does everything just "bolt" on and I can continue with my existing character?

The two main faction headquarters are located within the Skyrim map. You should have no trouble playing the content with either a current or a new character. Just be aware that the difficulty is geared for levels ten and up.
