Do you need to be Thane to buy a land in Hearthfire? : V

I've heard different opinions? do you need to be a thane of the hold in order to purchase land or can you purchase the land regardless?

oh ok thanks, so when I will go talk to the thane/steward he gives me the quests to become thane? how hard is it to be a thane does it take long time?

No you do not. I was not Thane on my mage (he's only completed the College quest line). According to the wiki, you need to be Thane, in which a courier doesn't show up. Or if you're not Thane, you just need to wait for the courier to show up.

Well I'm not Thane of Falkreath, and they won't let me purchase land.

A thanehood's easy enough to get. Just choose the hold you like and go to elderscrolls.wikia.com to find out how to become thane there.

And you also don't need to buiold a house to adopt, you can furnish an existing one.

Who do you talk to purchase the land in Falkreath? The Stewert? I just did a few quests, and the ill met by moonlight and Vile quests, and still no land.
