Rules

Bought this on PS3, just wanted to throw a post in the mix to balance all these negative threads.

I couldn't be more happy about my purchase. I previously had the Xbox version and loved it. The flashlight 'problem' never bothered me, i loved it, it added a lot of scares for me. Having said that, the decision to replace the flashlight with a light on doom guys armor is enabling me to play in an entirely new way. I'm more reckless, I play more like I did Doom 1 and 2. But its still scary! Also, the flashlight change (as well as a few other issues) have been heavily exaggerated by passionate fans. The flashlight that I am using stays on for about 20-30 seconds before dying, then takes about 7 seconds to recharge. Sounds like a lot of light but in-game you'll find yourself running it dead at the most inopportune moments. It really is implemented well.

The graphical enhancements put this miles ahead of what I played on the Xbox. I honestly didn't expect this much of an improvement. Keep in mind that I never played the PC version, though. I also noticed almost immediately how much more of the game I had been missing on xbox. Game runs incredibly smooth, too.

Checkpoint system is admittedly tedious, but I'm hopeful id will allocate some of their time to make it shorter/make it optional. And although I like the flashlight armor just as much as the original, it would be nice to have the option.

In my opinion, this is a must buy for any console gamer whether you have played the original or not. I cannot speak for PC gamers, though.

Anyway, thank you id software. I couldn't be happier.

Nothing negative? I am sure there is something in it that disappoints you, even if it's minor..

i like the checkpoint system because if it wasnt there i would be pausing every few minutes to save it anyways, so with this, i dont have to do that as much, only when i feel its very important to do so

because i think this game rules haha.

and i agree with the concept of a quicksave, i just think it could be done in the bg or faster or at the very least could be disabled. id software has never been the best at giving players the widest range of gameplay options, and from viewing most buyers' complaints online I think this could be the source of most of their problems. on the other hand, less options (in theory or potentially) equal less problems with gameplay. they just have to find that balance. Carmack and co seem to be focused on a consistent and smooth experience across all platforms and the best way for that is to keep the variables at a minimum. this is all guessing, though.

if this is true, that would explain why the pc version feels underwhelming for many: because console versions needed to stay fairly consistent in gameplay options to run at 60fps

im not trying to make a big deal of it, its just something I've been thinking about.

game does rule and as a ps3 user i am more than thrilled with what i got for my $39.99 :)

There is nothing negative about the PS3 version, because the only negative thing would be non-existence of a more modern port of the Doom franchise to the PS3. There is also nothing to compare this game to, compared to the PC and 360 versions.

I'm just glad I have a Doom on my PS3, along with my 360 and PC.
