PC Networking Server Issues No Dedicated Server

I had high hopes when I bought BFG edition. The thorn in my side for the last 8 years or so with idTech4 games has always been the networking code, which in the original Doom 3 and most of the games that followed it was atrocious. With the remastered version, if you're hosting a game all of these issues are fixed. I was able to hit all of my shots, no lag, none of the famous idtech4 "why am I not doing any damage?!" moments. This is great, it basically fixes an MP game that was basically broken for internet play when it was released all of those years ago. Too bad it was crippled out of the box.

In the new "improved" BFG version I can no longer change maps, call votes, kick players, or change the game mode. This has turned the BFG MP experience into absolute crap. To top this off, anyone who is playing against the game host is at a severe disadvantage. The amount of lag you have to endure when you don't host makes the game almost unplayable. There is no dedicated server. There is no way to choose the quality of the games you play. You are at the mercy of the matchmaking system. All of these features were in Quake 1, and they are the backbone of any competent PC multiplayer gaming experience.

The sad thing is, I know this won't be fixed. The consolization of PC games has run rampant to the point that new MP games are basically dead on arrival. Nobody wants to play this game online for more than 10 minutes, because it frankly svcks if you're not hosting. The player turnover I had while running my server was unreal. The only chance Doom3 had for a multiplayer revival was killed over night because everyone who tries the game ultimately gets driven away by the bad console networking.

So I'll be warning all of my friends to stay away, because there is really nothing new of value here if you're interested in multiplayer.

Well of course the BFG edition svckS on PC....You would be amazed at how many people play the MP on the console. Who would of guessed a game that was MADE for CONSOLE plays BEST on a CONSOLE!!!!

What I don't get is why they removed things that were already there. Why make PC gamers suffer? Also, this is originally a PC game, it wasn't "MADE FOR CONSOLE" lol. It's not like I'm asking for dedicated servers in the latest crappy CoD iteration on Xbox. Not everyone wants to have the low-fi dumbed down console experience.

You are partially correct....The ORIGINAL Doom's were made for PC....NOT the BFG edition....

But why give it a downgrade? How can you defend the decision to make part of a game worse just to make money? It's like you're trying pretend that the fact that you can play this on some other inferior system makes it O.K for them to ruin the PC version. They should've just added the extra missions as DLC on the superior version of the original game rather than fooling us into thinking that the BFG is *actually* improved. It's just laziness and contempt for loyal fans. As if 5 years of mediocre games (RAGE, Brink, Wolfenstein 2009) weren't enough they've decided to go after their back catalog as well.

All the problems you have mentioned are identical on the Ps3 version. Multiplayer is lame for the above mentioned reasons. Console players are mainly playing this game for the trophies/achievements.

hahalolppl what you said was just plain-old-stupid. BFG was actually ported over from PC from Doom3. Not the other way around. What bethesda did was port the game over from PC to Console. Then they ported it back over to PC which is where the problem is. They worked backwards. It should have been ported to PC then give the scraps to console. Consoles are ruining PC FPS games and thats a fact. Tired of this BS. If you like watered down games then good for you. That is console. PC FTW. Also the fact that they didn't bother to thoroughly test out the game before releasing is not good at all. Unless they don't care? P2P is crap and is destroying an otherwise good game. Plus there are no options to turn down settings. So much was plucked out from doom3 settings it's rediculous....

I'll admit if they fix the lag issues and offer dedicated support with all the options doom3 had and maybe even more; this game will rule. People will willingly pay for dedicated servers. They still do it on doom3. Otherwise it's epic fail and I won't bother buying anymore games from bethesda. Including doom4. I won't support a company that won't makes things right to its customers. Hope you are reading this bethesda. I've contacted you regarding this and did not get a satisfactory reply. "Maybe" or "we'll consider looking into it" is not acceptable. Acknolwedge there is a problem, apologize for the problems and then say you will work on resolving the problems. FIddling-around-the-bush and playing passive aggressive isn't right. It's insulting and shows that you don't care. Believe it or not the customers are the ones who keep you in business. As they say "take care of the customer and the customer will take care of you." I also suggest everyone complain to steam about these issues so they can put pressure on bethesda to fix this mess.

can we get a mod to reply on one of these pc topics? Concerning the multiplayer lag issues of d3 bfg edition i read tweets here and posts there but seems noone wants to post on the multiplayer pc lag issues or atleast confirm that the mp is totally screwed up the old d3 mp was messed up to but this is worse then that was !

Hello I have played Doom 3 since 2006 almost every day for hours and hours. I can say the mp in BFg is not even close to as good as in normal Doom 3. I have many Doom
friends and I have heard most of them say BFg svcks! and in the next text say "but it could be Great!"

To be a Great Game the lag needs to be fixed. Until then it will be nothing but a BF little g.

long time no see stray shot, i agree with you i switched over to consoles because of the cheaters on the old game and even on the consoles it lags, kinda sad to say that the ps3 that use's 8 cores/cpu.

the sad part is. they took out the lights out shutter switchs and the glass in lights out and tomiko reactor, they said its a pc port yet they trimed it down to dm,tdm,tourny and lms.

i can't imagine what it is like on the pc.

bethesda support emails me back saying verify game cache what a joke and whats that gonna do for the latency between players and the unstable pings nothing at all we players want this addressed its like all post ,tweets we make on the multiplayer issues are ignored! plain and simple multiplayer needs balance for more fair play at current its totally crap the latency and lag is so noticable items lag like start of match theres no mega/zerk displaying ingame but zerk/mega is there same for weapons sometimes players being shot and dieing before they even notice there being shot at the rocket jumps are way off between say im host they work perfect as if im not host its like the rocket launcher luanches me even further then it should and rockets are almost useless as the hit detection is total crap too when your not host so now is this a verify game cache problem i think not i await a real anwser or are you guys at bethesda gonna dance some more around the multiplayer issues!!!

@ bizei23 this happens on the ps3 and 360 too, so if it is truly a game cache problem then this surely is another rage pc release with their driver problems.

if they do not fix this i will not be buying anymore id software games til they A) go with a different support team aka activsion or any other better company then beth. B) start remaking the games if something was wrong hard coded and cant be patched then rerelease via steam/psn/xbl and give it out free.

as i said you can't blame the player only the game and this is one case that it is true.

its not the game cache for sure its the p2p multiplayer pc players should of been able to use dedicated servers just like the original d3 ive rented original doom 3 servers and there hell of alot better then the p2p system the pc is useing which i have no idea why as they could of updated the original d3 servers you think for dedicated servers in bfg ?

I just hope they will fix this mess as I see this game having so much potential. If not the only way you can really force them to fix things is to no longer buy their games. That alone can and will destroy them. You can only get away with creating $hitty games for so long before it catches up to you.
