Why do Doom and Doom II not run from HDD on 360?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:27 am

I assume there's some manner of technical reason, but in my opinion and with all due respect, it's really sort of unacceptable that I should have to completely uninstall the game when:
  • I can download Doom and Doom II from Xbox Live Arcade and run them from the HDD just fine.
  • Doom 3 runs from the HDD just fine.
  • I am not told before installing the game that this will be an issue (ala Halo 3 which warns users not to install because the game is optimised to run from disc.)
  • As far as I know this is an unprecedented issue on 360 for any sort of compliation or combo pack game (if I'm wrong, sorry.)
It's just sort of inexplicable to me. Not a game breaking issue or anything, but seriously. What gives?

I'm enjoying reexperiencing Doom 3 with a decent reskin and additional content, and as I said, it's not a total deal breaker, but this, the lack of flashlight dynamic shadows, and the inability to start a new game without losing my existing one really tarnish what was supposed to be a definitive version of the game. Just seems like a bit of a missed opportunity, marred by baffling oddities like this.

Doom and Doom 2 are best optimized to play off the system they were originally developed for.

That doesn't answer the question.

I've heard that you can actually just go to your dashboard and run the games from your "My games" folder/library thing.

You can launch any game installed or in the optical drive from My Games, but the problem is that both Doom and Doom II (unless you buy them separately via Xbox Live Arcade) are part of Doom 3 BFG Edition. You can launch that from My Games, but once you're in it and try to launch Doom or Doom II, it tells you you have to uninstall Doom 3 BFG Edition in order to play them because they can only be run from the disc. Which is crazy, because you run them from the HDD when you buy them from Live Arcade.

It just doesn't make sense and is an incredibly cumbersome solution.

this is probally one of the only true flaws for bfg edition, and they say the performance doesnt change if you dont install, but thats not the reason why i install games now, i install them so the xbox is completely silent and doesnt have to have the disc in there spinning for long periods of time, i only started doing this with games that i know ill play alot and for long periods of time so it wont wear out the system/ over heat the system

Exactly, especially since sound design is so important to a game like this that tries to get inside your head. (Back in the day, before I had played Amnesia and the like, this game succeeded beautifully in creeping me the hell out.)

But yeah, that too. Saving the optical drive from wear.

My copy of BFG is installed to my Xbox hard drive, and I can access Doom 1 and 2 from "My Games", even though BFG is installed. I stated this in the Xbox help section of this site on release day. You CAN install the game and still play Doom 1 and 2.

When to go to "my games", don't launch Doom 3 BFG, but keep scrolling right until you find Doom 1 or 2, and launch those, as they are considered separate games in the "my games" section.

we know this.

but it should be available from the the main bfg screen is all we are saying

its actually not a big deal to me, but its most def a flaw that should be fixxed

The only Doom and Doom II in My Games are the Xbox Live Arcade trials. Do I need to delete the trials? And as shmoehawk said, this to me would be an acceptable compromise... but still a sort of unreasonable one. Especially when it explcitly tells me to uninstall from within the game. If it's doable from HDD, why not from within the game? That's just odd to me.

I never bought the live arcade versions, or even downloaded the trials, so I don't know if you have to delete them.

Obviously the console still recognizes the BFG versions of Doom and Doom 2 as live arcade games, which is why accessing them through "my games" is the only way I can get them to start. The strange thing is that when i posted this workaround on these forums on release day, the mods here seemed as surprised as anyone else that this worked.

Shouldn't they have known? Shouldn't the devs have known for that matter? Instead they went so far as to include a screen in-game that urges people to uninstall the disc in order to play Doom and Doom 2. If I figured out the "my games" workaround within minutes, why didn't they before they released the game, instead of recommending playing from the disc? Laughable, to say the least.

Here is my original post and it's reply from a couple of weeks back:

That's just weird. Incredibly weird imo that they wouldn't know this. It's especially weird because they are, in fact, NOT 100% identical to the Arcade versions as I just discovered. I know this because when going through My Games, sorted alphabetically by title, they would say "Published by Activision" when I launched the trials (the full versions from BFG were nowhere to be found.)

However now that I've deleted the Arcade trials and can successfully launch these new versions from My Games, they say Bethesda instead. They may otherwise be identical, and perhaps they plan on (or already have?) replacing the Activision versions with these Bethesda ones.

But it's just downright odd that they 1) wouldn't know that, and 2) would have implemented it in such a way that it's necessary in the first place. They couldn't make it so selecting the game titles in the BFG menu exits and launches the Arcade versions? Did they not know it was even possible? That sounds insane. After all, they made the thing. Yet they tell us explicitly to uninstall. That's just so cumbersome and inefficient to my mind, and inexplicable to boot.

Oh well. At least I can access them finally without uninstalling.

I recall several months ago that the Activision ones were pulled from Live Arcade when Activision's rights expired. They were replaced a few weeks later as Bethesda Games on Live Arcade. Hence the issue, i suppose. Anyway, glad you got it working.

Ah, so it's because I had the old ones. Good thing I never bought them I guess O_o. Lol. Thanks for the help.

Still think it's very odd.

open your game manual turn to page 4 it states you cant install and play from the hdd. this is most likely a copy protection issue and not a bug at all. so you dont let your buddy borrow your disk and install them to his hdd and play them for free instead of paying moneysoft for them.
