This game did not anticipate my safe cracking skills...

So, I was exploring the area in the Golden Cat mission when I discovered a safe in a building called "Art Collector's home" I think, and I spent the next hour at the safe "Speedometering" its combination (I sat there and did things like 00[1-9] then 01[1-9] etc) until I got its combination. (Its 879 or something close to that) then I looted it and went on my way. then I helped slackjaw out and now he wants the combo to the safe, but I have to get it from the art dealer himself at the party... even though I already used my patience to attain the combo...

I thought it was pretty funny that I managed to get the safe open out of order...

I think there's a trophy for opening the safe before getting the combination.

Nope, there's one for looting it before giving the combo to slackjaw, but thats it.

I heard the first safe you come across uses the same code as Deus Ex and System Shock

The one in the sewers? I haven't been able to open that one. Can't figure it out, and I'm not as skilled as the OP.

You gotta look at the whiskey! To be honest, I spotted the code by complete accident.

Heh. The note gives you the clue - just look around.

Yeah...451, that code was used as an easteregg in a multitude of games...was a System Shock reference in Deus Ex, but is usually seen as a Deus Ex reference in newer games...

As for the combination of the art dealers safe...I was also a bit disappointed that I couldn't give Slackjaw the combination after finding it by trial...would have been easy to program, just a trigger when the safe is open...but then again it is probably by design...otherwise you could skip the Golden Cat almost entirely...you'd just have to get Emily...

How'd you get into the art dealer's house? When I found it, it was locked and required a key.

You can get the key from saving a woman in the back alleys on the way to the Golden Cat. Or get it from the Art Dealer himself.

Spoiler
The key to the safes is in a message that you pick up. It tells you to "Look to the Whiskey" Near all the safes, you will find whiskey bottles. The code to the safe is written near the bottles.

To add to what SourLime said, the balcony doors are unlocked. Only the ground floor needs a key.
