Well alot of the raw materials are found only after purchasing Heathfire like quarry stone and clay. Just make sure you have a whole lot of iron ingots!

You do need sawed logs but I think you can only purchase or keep the wood you saw at the mill after you have Hearthfire.

You'll need to DL it first, some things aren't available until you do. Don't worry about stone or clay though. It's not necessary to buy those, each building site has quarried stone and clay deposits just a handful of feet away, you just need a pickaxe and you'll have an unlimited access to those. Straw, glass, and goat horns can be bought in decent numbers for cheap from any general goods trader, there's at least one in every town (e.g., Belethor in Whiterun).

Run around to each weapons merchant and buy as many iron ingots as you can carry (and a small handful of corundum ones) and at a forge select "building materials" and make a ton of nails and also some irong fittings and hinges (and some locks, you'll need the corundum ores for those.)

Then, if you want mounted animal heads in your house you'll need things like bear pelts, sabre cat pelts and teeth, slaughterfish scales, etc. And more iron and steel ingots for making things like safes.

Also, if you want to make a shrine to each God in your cellar you'll need one each of their amulets (Mara, Stendarr, etc.) and other things, like gems and such.

You're better off going to build the house and seeing what you need rather than anticipating what you'll need.

Yes, but it's not available on every platform for another month. I was going to ask the exact same question so that I could start stocking up now on ingots/pelts etc. that are already in the vanilla game, so that I have some ready for when I can buy the DLC. It makes sense to start collecting the stuff I do have access to in vanilla right away. I tend to walk past iron ore veins, but if I'll need it I'll stop doing that and get mining.

It's no good suggesting that people go to build the house and see what is needed, when the DLC is not even released for us yet!

No point trying to collect logs as soon as you get Hearthfire, there will be no where to deliver them till you have purchased some land. Stone, clay, straw, glass and goat horns come with the DLC, so you cannot collect them yet. Each property comes with an unlimited source of stone and clay.

You can collect iron (LOTS!)), steel, corundum, and a bit of most other types of metal. Leather for leather strips, sabre cat teeth and pelts, especially the snowy variety, lots of small and large antlers, although each property comes with its own inquisitive elk you can knock off for ornaments. Wolf and bear pelts, slaughterfish scales, horker tusks and mudcrab chitin, and an amulet for each divine for shrines you want in your home, though possibly you can only have them in two of the homes, there was a glitch in one of mine.

I'm still in the building process so what are the Sabre Cat teeth for? Are they for the trophies and mounts?

Teeth, pelts, scales, horns, chitin and antlers are for the mounted dust catchers, I ended up raiding all Braggen's other houses in the end for that many sabre cat pelts and teeth, as well as the amount of iron you needed for three houses. Still chasing iron and goats horns to finish furnishing and another batch of logs. Pity you cannot transfer unused logs to another house.

You'll need at least 100 but best to have 150 iron ingots and also and maybe about 20 to 30 corundum ingots to build and fit one house with 3 add on rooms. The other materials like goats horns are for light fittings and you also need some leather strips for animal head mounts along with the other animal loot you get from killing them. Skulls, pelts, claws and such things.

IRON INGOTS HOW THEY HAUNT ME...

My son has laughed when he saw the piles of ingot loot a couple of my characters tend to collect (he witnessed an epic 400 Dwarven ingot smelting session). Now I got to laugh as I saw his character wielding a pick over all of Skyrim in an evening!

I am almost finished, ran out of those goat horns again, ran out of traders selling them, and ran out of goats! Your pile of logs actually is used for all three houses, wondered how I went through them so fast.
