Is it worth picking up Dawnguard?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 11:04 pm

Hello.. first post on the forums. I want to know if Dawnguard is worth the cash. I have heard of good things about it... also some bad. (killing of merchants, questgivers, etc...) Thanks for any opinion on topic. Will take any reply into thought.

I think it is a good DLC but i also think you should wait until they say whether or not there will be a patch, because the bugs are quite atrocious.

I haven't had any issues with it all. I think people are kind of over reacting to the whole vampire attack thing, but that's just my opinion.

That is good to know. I like having my NPCs live unless I decide to kill them. The vampire attack thing worried me.

I have read about some peoples bugs they have encountered and some are really bad.
I encountered a bug that made it completely impossible to do anymore vampire radiant quests,me=not very happy about that.

I have lost a couple NPC's due to the attacks, but so far they've only been guards. From my experience, random dragon spawns are far more destructive to my NPC's than the vampires are.

To me, it was worth $20 just to be able to craft ebony arrows, but that's just me.

Arrow forging is good.. will take that into consideration.

There needs to be some fixes. An add-on should never take away from established gameplay mechanics.
Current losses for one character who was only present for two of these attacks, one of which occurred out of view across town:
- 9 merchants across 4 settlements...and one caravaneer
- 5 quest givers
- 3 quest targets
- 5 quests stuck active, unable to continue or conclude
- 4 quest items, otherwise removable, now permanently lodged in my misc section
- Numerous quests unable to begin due to losses of key npc's

To be clear, I'm enjoying the Dawnguard gameplay. I like the quests and also the new items and areas. I feel I've gotten more than my $20 worth and thank the devs for the storyline and additions. Overall it has been fun, though I won't be purchasing it for my PC version. The additions are nice but these chaotic vamp attacks killing (what I consider) rather essential npc's have rendered the rest of the province nothing more than a hassle and journal log clutter-fest. Some basic quests cannot be finished or started, quest items are now stuck in one's inventory, and the economy is in shambles.

Fixes are needed, yes. And they should come (hopefully faster than the atomic nirnroot bug fix).
But I stll feel Dawnguard gameplay itself is well worth the money. As stated I enjoy the new content...just not the new hassles.

edit - I do have to admit though, my brother-in-law's Dawnstar was wiped out by a Vampire attack. So, I guess if you get it just keep a lot of saves handy in case someone important dies.
