Three chickens.... or five chickens.....
Are those two missing chickens really that big of a deal?

I think its written somewhere in one of the elder scrolls that having 5 chickens over 3 unlocks the ability to adopt a kahjiit kitten.

but thats a rumor from a random npc spawn who heard from M'aiq and who the heck knows where he heard that from.

but if thats true then my game saves are screwed because two of my chickens are dead due to bear attacks and my steward wont give me the option to replace them and I cooked the third for dinner.

This ^

$5 dlc. I am happy I've got three chickens (& a horse, & a cow, & a coach, a a barb, & a forge, & a steward, & two adoptable children....)

Now all I want is a similarly price dlc that lets me build up Winterhold and makes me the new Jarl of the hold and my home situation will be more than complete

More chickens is pointless you get one nest only and the respawn rate for that lone little egg is pretty long, and the enclosure only holds two chickens. There is plenty of creatures around your home, why bog things down with useless chickens. The consoles do not have unlimited resources to keep track of all these new things. Pretty sure you can have 4 chickens if you get a glitch, but you will lose something else and your fourth chicken is probably going to find somewhere less crowded to live.

Do the chickens respawn if killed? A revered dragon was hungry and ate one :/

It's probably to limit the number of living things around the house, and avoid performance issues/bugs. It can get crowded there (chickens, cow, horse, you, driver, family outside, housecarl, steward, bandits raiding your home, etc.

What I find odd is that after I buy my 3rd chicken I no longer get the option to hire a bard. So far I've chosen the chickens.

You need to combine this with an summon chicken spell.

I saw a giant chicken in a Youtube video. A rather disturbing one, actually.

This is it exactly. Once you have too many NPCs, animals included, in a cell, things start to bog down.

Thinking about this, I don't know if I have even seen more than 3 Chickens at any farm or coop. Then again, I was not conducting a chicken census.
