Anyone else bothered by doorway in basemant?

When you go into the cellar, to your immediate left there is a doorway to a wall. I feel like something was cut.

I believe that's the alcove where, if you're a vampire, you can build a coffin for sleeping purposes.

Well it's not very well explained as a good number of people have no interest in being a vampire.

Yeah, I knew that vamps got a coffin, but I didn't realize it went in that alcove. Its a shame there isn't something else non-vamps can put there. Even just a candle or anything so it doesn't look like such a weird, devoid doorway.

It doesn't have to be explained. I've been to the cellar many times and I've not seen this "alcove". Then again, my cellar's purpose is only for smithing, so it's pretty bare anyway. If I'm going to sit, it's going to be on my porch, enjoying the scene of nature, not a smelter.

I'm actually thinking about letting my Khajiit go vampire. He's already the ultimate Illusionist/assassin/sneak thief, and this would make him even more awesome at it. It's nice to know he will have a nice cozy bed to come home to after a long night of burglary and other antisocial activities.

Its stupid that they put an alcove in the cellar for the coffin, but don't let you put something else there or hide it somehow if you don't make the coffin. Even if they put a tapestry over it so its hidden from view would be better.

Agreed. Even just a bare wall would have been preferred to an elaborately decorated alcove that draws your attention to the absence of something.

EDIT: Come to think of it, it makes little sense that you can build a vampire coffin AND shrines dedicated to the divines in the cellar (especially considering Serana's given reason for not wishing to marry the player). Logically, it should have been an either/or thing. Either a vampire coffin and perhaps a cage for a human captive OR a shrine base with shrines.

I agree, I've suggested before that Hearthfire should have had mini shrines to the Daedra that you can place in your home instead of shrines to the Divines, so vampire players or Daedra worshipper players can have shrines that make sense for their character.

Daedra shrines are rather pointless, I think. As far as I know, they give out artifacts like the Wabbajack, not blessings (cursings?)

A wine rack would have fitted in there nicely, with some shelves to put stuff on. My vampire character actually tried to use it for something else, but did not really want buckets and brooms there, or the gardening equipment, the straw is so hopeless it does not even stack and in the end he just gave up and put a coffin there. He ever does another I will sit there and take the time to think about it a bit more. Either that or the second character who is a werewolf has a cellar to furnish yet, but she does not have as much stuff to choose from as Braggen

My idea was that the Daedric Shrines would offer similar blessings to their followers that the Divine shrines give. Alternatively, why not just have the shrines without the blessings, for role players?

Since when do Daedra bless anyone? They would more likely curse you with something just for fun.

Far as I know, that doesn't require a shrine.

Another question... if you're not a vampire, can you still build a coffin? It could be like a guest room for your vampire friends.

Nope. Although I suppose if you really wanted the coffin, you could become a vampire, build the coffin and then just cure yourself afterwards. Haven't tried myself.

Nocturnal's Blessing? :ermm:
You're forced to protect her shrine(s) in both life and death, and she has an unknown "cost" that she expects in return for her blessing that "can be quite high", according to a certain NPC. If you don't have her favor for whatever reason, she curses you with misery and bad luck.
