Well is my face red, after further investigation my own issue was thinking that the small house &--#62; entryway happened by default at the end of main house completion so that it's possible to add additions (which are newly viewable in the drafting menu). What I did not realize is that the remodel to entryway step is a separate, selectable step at the very bottom of the menu, below all the additions.
So the starter section is confirmed changeable in my game to somewhat bare state. I noticed assorted containers, some clutter was still there - so chest items would probably have been safe during remodel after all. But now that I know how it works- that you can apparently build wings without being required to have the formal entry- I may just keep the front part as small house. It'll be like having a cozy guardhouse!
Sorry, I thought you realised you get a choice as to whether or not you want to change it to an entryway. That is what I have been doing for some of the houses, leaving it as the small house, but without the bed and firepit, that and the entryway has that silly low table with a broom on it, which I always leave out anyway. The main advantage of the entryway is the weapon racks and large display case. The furniture in the small house appeals to me more even if you cannot do much with it. The table and chair and chair in the corner will get used by NPC's.
The door mat looks nice if you have the patience to get your steward to furnish it, but then you have to put up with all the furniture being built, I decided the door mat was not worth it. If they ever do a patch for the DLC I would love the option of building the bench ourselves for the entryway since that is probably what the door mat comes with.
