In the MMO RuneScape, a player had the option to train multiple combat statistics. Each player had a "combat level" a number which was derived from the values of their combat statistics. The combat level was important, because in the main PvP area of the game, players were pitted against each other based on how similar their combat levels were.
Some players "abused" this by making accounts called "pures." A pure was an account that would intentionally imbalance their stats; get outrageously high offensive stats with minimal (usually 1) defence and other combat stats. This would leave the player with a decievingly low combat level, but they would be able to make short work of equal-leveled opponents, assuming they didn't get killed first due to the low defense.
Like a large portion of RS's population, I LOVED this system, as it created a sort of "PvP metagame." 1 defence pures countered balanced accounts, 45 defense pures with low attack "soft" countered 1 defense pures, and so on. RuneScape is, within the next week or two, completely removing this aspect of the game, by making the "strongest" build in all situations a completely balanced account. I quit playing as soon as this was announced a few months ago.
Now, onto The Elder Scrolls. I've seen a lot of talk about how the game completely lets you chose which traits you want to focus on your character having, which sounds like a promising candidate for a new and 100000x better RuneScape pure system.
I guess my questions can be boiled down to:
1) Do you think there will be a PvP area where players are pitted against each other based on something like a "combat level"? Do you imagine that such an area would have a kill-to-loot mechanic?
2) Do you think it will be viable to focus heavily on some traits to try to get an advantage against others?
If the answer to these questions is "yes," I'll strongly consider giving this MMO a try, and I think it'll develop a thriving PvP playerbase, of players constantly trying to invent stronger and stronger builds.
