So a union goes on strike and (apparently) as a direct result the company closes down, costing 18,000 people their jobs. Aren't unions supposed to help employees?

Or am I missing something?

You're missing something.

Hostess is loosing money. They went into negotiations with the union over money. The employees refused the new terms, went on strike, they had until this morning to return to work. Hostess has filed bankruptcy twice and is not making money they are left with little options.

Then the company asked them to return to work... and they don't? Even though they knew it would close down without them working. Well then. I guess unions aren't necessarily the smartest things in the world. Talk about [censored] people.

That still seems rather counterproductive on the union side. Either make less money or no money at all. Seems like an easy choice.

Perhaps the wages are too little to effectively live on anyway. If a company can't make enough money to sustain its employees at a reasonable wage, there a bigger problems at work than uncooperative unions.

The straw that breaks the camel's back doesn't account for the ton of bricks that came before.

How does one "shuttering" a plant? (Is that grammatically correct? As in "One who shuts"? Shutting....shutting is correct...)

.......it is shuttering its plants and firing about 18,000 workers....

I can't remember the last time I ate a Twinkie (*cough* :ermm:

) or any of their products.
