I was visiting skyrim tropes today and I found this,
"With the addition of Hearthfire, you're welcome to wait inside a store until the storekeeper falls asleep, but you'll find that half of their stock sitting on the counter has gone with them. They now put their counter stock away when they close up shop, making it harder to steal."

Seems questionable to me.

Hearhtfire added some new things to the shopkeepers list of goods, it changed nothing else that I have ever seen. Picking the lock is hardly inviting you in, and all the stuff that is usually on display is still on display if you want to go to all the trouble of picking the lock while they are asleep. You are still tressapassing you will still be asked to leave if you are caught. Some shopkeepers you are friendly with will let you in after hours, but that was so before Hearthfire.

What's funny is that even when you are invisible and undetectable (my Khajiit is a vampire illusionist sneakmaster, he never gets seen), they'll tell you to leave if you're in their shop after hours.
