How do you get to Fort Dawnguard?

The marker for speaking to the leader of the DG shows near Nightingale Hall, and I can see the fort, but I have no idea how to get there. I also can't find the cave that Gstaff spoke of.

It's in the southeast, near some structure of Stendar (or however you spell his name).
