Lack of unique items

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 12:43 pm

I was a little bummed by the apparent lack of unique items. The story was fun and interesting, but the gear is nearly useless. Maybe it's unfair to compare this DLC to Shivering Isles, but SI had tons of named unique items including Dawn/Duskfang, Sheogorath's staff, Jyggalag's sword, etc. including an entire plane of Oblivion to explore. Dawnguard gave us a crossbow and some extra caves. I don't mean to be overly negative, the DLC was very fun to complete both on Harkon's and the Dawnguard's sides.

Well Shivering Isles was new lands while Dawnguard was more focused quests (which I thought was really lacking in Skyrim) so wouldn't allow for much new items though the few it did give were well quite unique.
Maybe in the next DLC will allow for more unique items.

Dawnguard gave us only a few caves and a crossbow?(DAWNGUARD SPOILERS):
Spoiler

-Vampire armor that comes in different colors
-Dawnguard armor in different colors
-Dragonbone weapons
-Crossbow/Dwarven Crossbow
-Crossbow bolts/elemental Crossbow bolts
-Dawnguard weapons and shield
-New area: Soul Cairn
-New conjuration spells from Soul Cairn
-3 new Shouts
-New area: Forgotten Vale
-Auriel's Bow
-Auriel's Shield
-Ancient Snow Elf Armor
-Harkon's items
-Aetherium forge items
-New Vampire Lord form
-Vampire Lord/Werewolf perk trees
-Falmer Heavy Armor
-New craftable items

There is a new Plane of Oblivion to explore. That is a good amount of items listed, and I am sure I missed a few. Unique items wise? There is a fair amount. Could be more, but I think you may be exaggerating with what Dawnguard lacks.

hmm just a list comparison of unique items, purely unique in model or re texture and can only obtain one(not counting glitches)

Dawnguard
Spoiler

Ancient Falmar armor
Ancient Falmar boots
Ancient Falmar gauntlets
Auriel's Bow
Auriel's Shield
Harkons Sword
Aetherium forge item (since can claim one out three items)
Jiub Locket

Shivering Isles
Spoiler

Sword of Jyggalag
Nerveshatter
Shadowrend
Staff of Sheogorath
Dawnfang/Duskfang
Talisment of Albetment
Both rings of lawship (Demntia and Mania)
Diadem of Euphoria
Golden Saint/Dark Seducer armour -can only obtain one and no where else....but given guards have these on all the time unsure weather to include it
Sheogoraths Regalia
Fork of Horripilation
Ruins Edge- While same looking as a Dark Seducer bow has a unique enchantment of random effect)

of course Dawnguard does add more advanced gameplay mechanics like vampire lord and most unique items is able to do something no other item can do which most of Shivering Isles items couldn't do something completely with exception of two items

Fair enough, but (SPOILER) the Soul Cairn isn't necessarily a place where you spend much time or want to for that matter. The Forgotten Vale (which is really sweet, I will admit) is also limited in the amount of time you spend there and the amount of exploration to be done (while the Paragons and Frost Giants are pretty sweet as are the amphibious dragons). And I'm not trying to be overly critical, Dawnguard is admittedly very cool. But the amount of time I spend in the Shivering Isles greatly eclipses the time I spent playing Dawnguard. And I walked away from SI with a completely new arsenal and armor/apparel to show for it. The story for Dawnguard is excellent and the whole DLC is very well done. Buuuuuuut I suppose I'm being selfish when I say I just was hoping for some more unique AND useful gear that is hard to pass up (like amber weapons, madness armor, a sword that looks incredible and shapeshifts depending on the time of day, a staff that freezes time, the ability to conjure some flipping sweet creatures, and so on).

In all honesty, I dont think comparing DG to Shivering Isles has much point, they are two different styles of DLC. One integrates itself into the vanilla game, and one bolts on a huge new area.

DG and KotN? Thats a better comparison IMO. I have my fingers crossed for an SI style DLC for Skyrim though!

This aeherian items for example are not professional work, sorry just used old models and retextured them a bit. Every average modder could to this, From an professional company I would expect more, same with snow elf armor and the snow elves themself, also Harkons sword just a akavri-katana which was 15 minutes in Photoshop.

Well as the people continue to say you can't compared it to Shivering Isles, than I say you can't compare it to Knigts of the Nine, it costs the twice.

Dawnguard isn't a full expansion, whereas the Shivering Isles was. Of course Dawnguard is going to offer less than SI, simply because it's on a smaller scale.

That said, as a PS3 user I can't comment on the amount of unique items.

Actually harkon's sword uses a unique mesh as well. All the new items use new meshes, not just reskins.
