Nice that these things can now happen in cities too.

Just save before going into any city cause you might lose a shopkeeper.

Oh yes.

There have been times where a Vamp has slaughtered most of a city. Usually the city guards will butcher the invaders in short order. But every so often...

Do these happen even if you do not join the Dawnguard? I dont want the tedium of getting jumped on characters who dont start the story. But I want the DLC.

I think so but do not know for sure. If you join the vampire side, the dawnguard jump on you and so do the stendarr. If you are on the dawnguard side you have only the vampires to worry about.

I just found out that merely installing the DLC triggers them. So I wont be buying the DLC. Too bad.

In my opinion, to not buy something like Dawnguard for this one issue is... ignorant.

But to each his own...

You do know that some people don't start Skyrim MQ with certain character in order not to have the (already small) towns depopulated by random dragon attacks, right?

How many times on these forums the issue was brought forth asking Bethesda to make npc immortals when fighting other npcs/ creatures? To see the same mistake repeated, even worse, without a way to avoid it is... Unnerving at best.

And I saw three times that many threads about people complaining that too many NPC's were listed as "essential" and thus couldn't be killed.

No quest giving NPC is a non-essential, meaning none of those will die in the vampire attacks.

One thing is killing npcs willingly, another one is witnessing merchants and sometimes even targets of smaller quests to die becuase they decided to battle an ancient dragon (and now vampire lord, too) with an iron spoon in their hands.

After protecting the good people of Riverwood against numerous dragon attacks for a long long time I had managed to save everyone but some guards...this morning Alvor lost his life by attempting to save me from a vampire ambush

Gave him a proper funeral.

My statement still stands. No quest giver is listed as "non-essential". therefore aside from the random shop owner, you're not really losing anything if the Vampires should happen to kill them. In most cases, someone else steps up and takes over the shop in question, so even that is a moot point.
