How is Dawnguard so far? This PS3 user wants some details

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:43 pm

For those of us on PS3 we have no option to get DG so far.
So how is it? Is it worth getting if it ever does get released for PS3?

Thanks

Imo it was dissapointing,it was more dungeons and pretty short, nothing really new other then a few new shouts,a few new enemies and two small areas. The only two cool places are the Vale and the soul cairn. It had so much potential but was wasted, they should have expanded on the vampires a lot more and expanded on werewolves to but they didn't,just, really dissapointing in all the wasted potential. But oh well, could be saved for later DLC or expansions.

it is ok. generally what i expect in dlc from bethesda is for there to be more open world spaces to be added. and there kind of is in DG but you can't acess it without progressing halfway through the DG quest line.

other than that the quests are meh, although occasionally a few surprises are thrown your way that make it worth following. Vampire lord is fun with a few, but fairly large, problems. i have only played the vampire side of the DLC but i got 7 hours out of it, even with fast traveling every where, so i assume the dawnguard side is about the same (hopefully without overlapping the same quest objectives) so i would say a base 14 hours of gameplay added. Although if your like me you'll spend probably 4 times that amount either using the new weapons and locations to roll play.

my biggest problem with DG is not unique to DG itself, an issue that occurs with skyrim itself often, but the fact that EVERY quest sends you to the furthest point of the map possible to complete the next objective. its a cheap, frustrating and lame way of attempting to slap extra play time into the DLC. Basicly by designing it so that half of the play time consists of walking to your next objective. I recomend just using fast travel when playing DG, unless you feel like doing some dungeon diving or dragon fights along the way.

I'd pick it up and not regret it if I was still playing Skyrim on the PS3. As it is, I don't regret getting it for the PC and I don't feel like I waited an extra month for nothing. It was loads of good fun with shock and awe moments.

It's pretty enjoyable when I wasn't bombarded with game-breaking bugs.

It's very short, with two copy+pasted main questlines that send you to the exact same locations and hardly differ from each other. Other than that, expect even more of those wonderful radiant quests.

I liked it but it isn't a great DLC. There are some nice sized new areas, but the two biggest are somewhat empty. Instead, my favorite parts were visual reveals of some smaller locations. And I actually thought the best part was an optional side quest that I didn't even pick up until after I'd finished the main story of Dawnguard.

Personally I did get enough time and fun out of it to justify the $20 I paid.

I loved it! I still love it!
Granted, it wasn't the "best" writing in the world. There were a few twists and turns that were fun for me, but by-and-large the story was contrived and fairly linear. For some people this is an insult beyond insults, but for me it was just a good story that they told and allowed me to participate in. No different from any other action game I've played on the Xbox360. I still had fun with it, and I still love the random vampire attacks (in city and in the wild) and I really like the Vampire Lord addition.

The Werewolf perk additions make playing the wolf more fun for me. On both characters I've reached my happy-place, having leveled all the skills I'm going to use and achieved all the perks I'm going to need, I have a ton of fun popping into Wolf (or VL) form and rauaging a dungeon full of bandits :D

I'm also a fan of the Radiant Questing and random encounters, so as the vampire its always fun to
Spoiler
kill a civilian in a city and pin it on the dawnguard
just to harass them :) or be jumped by a pack of Vampire hunters in the wild, or a pack of Vampires! looking to make a name.

So all in all I had fun and I'm still having fun with it. I highly suggest getting a hold of it. Alas, I can't say much about the bugs and such since I haven't really experienced any of them...or noticed them yet...but those seem to be a 50/50 craps shoot. I suppose I just got lucky.

Think of it maybe in these terms: You're going to see a movie. Its an action flick. It might be good, but the trailers don't look promising so you just don't know. Reviewers are back and forth with it so they're no help. It's going to be 50/50, you like it or hate it. Go in accepting the worst. Don't even hope for the best, just accept that it might be total crap. Even if its something mediocre, you'll still be entertained and you'll leave happy.

*snipped because I'm referring to this poster's signature...
This guy's (or gal's ) signature holds some weight with me.
There are reviews in IGN and other sites that I just don't trust, but that's usually because I don't trust the person doing the review. I sold video games for 3 years, and the one thing I've learned is that we all have different tastes. So to have someone that enjoy's FPS's and adores C.O.D. review -for instance- Skyrim (an open world, FPS, RPG) I have to expect his opinion to be skewed. He may rate it a 6 because for him it was too slow paced or whatever, where I would rate it a 10 because I dig this style of RPG.
Same-same with Dawnguard. I wouldn't rate it a 10, but a solid 7 or 8 for a DLC I think is fair and still good. Others would disagree and rate it really low, because they have a different point of view, and for them that's fair.

My official rating (for what it's worth) is a 9 in terms of DLC content, down-graded to a possible 7 for bug issues many are experiencing. I suppose that's how I would rate it.

Hope my 2 cents helps! :)

It didn't really live up to the €20 price-tag.
€10 sure, but 20?

Don't get me wrong, it was good. I just expected more content for that price.
The 2 new areas were kind of meh, but the overall storyline was good, and it requires 2 playthroughs to see it all but I suspec they're pretty similar (only done the Dawnguard side, but looked at the wiki and realized it's pretty similar).

Yup, my experience as well. It delivers a decent amount in terms of content, but definitely falls down on the bugs (Just have a look at the PC/Xbox bug forums - but look out for spoilers though, some bugs are quest-related). That said, it's certainly on the better side of DLC I've bought in the past in terms of value.

It could have been better - though it was by no means bad. In my opinion at least.

I'm enjoying the story so far (haven't finished it yet....I'm a slow gamer...), the crossbows are quite fun to use, and some of the new locations are cool - and a few of the new dungeons are sweet as hell.

I don't regret buying it.

And, OP, did you make the Dragon Priest mask in your avatar? It's awesome! :o

I had alot of fun with it and honestly I wasn't expecting much at all. A truly epic battle between vampires and vampire hunters. There was alot more content than I thought there would be too. Needless to say, it surpassed my expectations.

Yeah but his quote tells me he didn't enjoy Skyrim much but he still bought the probably overpriced DLC.

Didn't like it at all before I even started it. The whole random vamps in towns was ridiculous. They were killing off quest givers at level 7 and you didn't get the quest to start till level 10. Uninstalled it and started over again. Even with going back to Tribunal for Morrowind. The DB attacked the player a few times and then stopped once you took the quest. If I had gone on with it, half the towns would be empty of NPCs and quest givers before I had finished the DLC. Also looked pretty small for what we were promised at the beginning as usual. Just over 500Mb download on 360. Atleast Shivering Isles was over a Gb FFS!!! We were supposed to get REAL Expansions and not little junky DLC like Oblivion. What else is new with the game companies. They lie through their teeth and double talk us with P.R. non sense to get us to buy the stuff.

Who's to say that their won't be an expansion sized DLC? I personally haven't run into the bug's that alot of ppl have had, but I can see the reason's for starting out with a smaller DLC and seeing how it reacts to the vanilla game.

I think it is well worth the $20 I paid for it, I have only done one run through so far and plan on doing it from the other side very shortly. Concidering that they are like the CW quest's in that they are basically the same, I wanted a little time between doing the different sides. I play fairly slow, so it took time to get through the DG side.

I'm playing my 1st werewolf also as I had read that the DLC made them alot more fun and so far it has been. I haven't had the massive amounts of random vampire attack's on town's... just a massive amount in the wild with the character that was doing the questline. He has had alot fewer vampire aatack's since finishing the MQ. None of my 4 characters have had the attack's other ppl have talked about... and I really feel lucky about that.

I used to expect quality from Bethesda, however in some instances they have gotten worse. Now their DLC for Fallout 3 were all great. I also know that sometimes the size can fool you. Because alot of stuff they use to make it is already in the system, so it doesn't take up room. Mostly the size depends on how much new stuff they have added to the game itself. My main complaint about Dawnguard is how ridiculous the randomizing is with the vamps. I don't play quest by quest and so I pick up alot of them first and then explore in between, like I have always done in TES games. But now half the quest givers get killed off and you end up with a journal full of dead ends.
