Skyrim crashes on start.

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 10:51 am

Hi,

I have a problem and i have searched all over the internet.
My Skyrim crashes on start-up every time. I recently installed Dawnguard and Heartfire, at first my Skyrim didn′t register them being in my data files, but it ran just fine.
I finally got that to work, I can enable the DLc′s but now, it crashes on the startup screen. All i get is when i start is a black screen for about a second and it then dissapears.
I can′t even run the regular Skyrim now.
I′ve tried adjusting my audio settings, removing the Skyrimprefs.ini, completely removing and reinstalling the game and just about everything I found on youtube/google.
I′ve been at it for the past two days and am really getting anoyed. Nothing works.
I wasn′t really sure where to post this, sorry if it′s in the wrong part of the forum.
Anny help will be greatly appreciated.

You would get more help http://www.gamesas.com/forum/180-pc/, I think.

So reinstallation didn't work? Strange. Did you update anything recently (graphics card drivers, DirectX etc.)?

Crash on start is usually caused by a plugin that is missing it's master. If you don't use mods that shouldn't be a problem, as both Skyrim.esm and Update.esm (that are masters for the DLCs) are hardcoded to be loaded as the first two.

Another possible cause is messed up menu xml files in the data folder, so see if you have \menus folder under Data folder, delete it if you do, and have Steam verify the game cache.
I was thinking of New Vegas there, Skyrim uses the new system  Still, if you have used UI mods you can try deleting the \Interface folder and verifying the game cache.

The last one i know of is having a display mode set that your hardware can't support, but that shouldn't happen normally. Regardless, deleting Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim folder and running the launcher will fix that up.

Haven't seen it been caused by anything but those three

Well in that case, and since the crash survived reinstall, i'd suggest you uninstall Skyrim, after that delete every file and folder (really delete, not just move to trash) related to Skyrim it leaves behind you can find, restart the computer and reinstall. If the crash survives that, you have a computer computer that defies logic :hehe:
